Sr. Director, Responsible AI Science and Engineering

Overview Salesforce's Office of Ethical and Humane Use seeks a Sr. Director of Science and Engineering to lead Responsible AI (RAI) efforts in technical testing, evaluation, data science, and engineering. This senior technical leadership role focuses on transforming RAI from manual expert reviews to scalable, AI-powered automated systems, ensuring "trustworthy by default" standards across the enterprise. Responsibilities Define the Technical North Star and develop an 18‑24‑month roadmap for moving from manual ethics test reviews to automated, AI‑powered testing. Architect production systems, building robust infrastructure (e.g., automated intake pipelines, LLM‑judge patterns, LLM Council approaches) that can handle Salesforce‑scale traffic. Set scientific rigor by establishing research foundations, evaluation metrics, and technical logic for testing and aligning AI systems. Influence cross‑functional strategy by partnering with technical and product teams to embed RAI into the development lifecycle across business units. Lead technical responsibility as a "player‑coach," providing mentorship, managing performance, and unblocking complex challenges in study design, data analysis, and software engineering. Qualifications Technical Foundation (Required) : 10+ years in software engineering and/or AI research, with hands‑on proficiency in Python, SQL, CI/CD pipelines, and AI‑powered coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor). Proven ability to build production‑scale systems and relevant applied knowledge of data science. AI Systems & Architecture : Experience building LLM‑powered systems (agent frameworks, RAG, multi‑model orchestration) and deep knowledge of modern AI architectures. Responsible AI Expertise : Proven track record in evaluation science, adversarial testing (red teaming), and designing systematic defenses against bias, hallucination, and other RAI risks. Strategic & Leadership Excellence : 5+ years managing technical teams, strong performance management, operational excellence, and experience translating complex technical/ethical narratives into strategic business goals for executive stakeholders. Senior Management experience, comfort charting direction in high‑ambiguity environments, and using data to make pragmatic trade‑offs. A related technical degree is required. Why This Matters This position will influence how the entire tech industry approaches responsible agentic AI, setting patterns and frameworks that may become standards. You will operate at the frontier of agentic AI safety, combining LLM‑judges, mechanistic interpretability, run‑time protections, and adversarial red teaming with rigorous evaluation science in a high‑visibility transformation of a major enterprise’s ethics practice. In‑Office Expectations 36 days per quarter to support customers and/or collaborate with their teams. Compensation & Benefits Base salary range: $218,400 – $365,200 annually. In select cities within the SanFrancisco and NewYork City metropolitan areas, the range is $263,200 – $401,400 annually. Compensation includes base salary only and does not include company bonus, incentive for sales roles, equity, or benefits.
