Job Description:

Summary: The Truck and Trailer Mechanic position is responsible for maintaining company trucks and trailers, including but not limited to: repairing, cleaning and installing equipment, adjusting and maintaining brake systems, road testing equipment to detect and analyze mechanical problems, and perform vehicle inspections. Must possess or be able to complete requirements for a Class A Commercial Driver's License.

Essential Functions: • Perform routine inspections and maintenance on vehicles and trailers • Install new equipment • Operate shop equipment and required diagnostic equipment • Occasionally endure severe weather conditions while performing maintenance tasks • Performs related duties as assigned by shop supervisor and management

Knowledge Skills and Abilities: • Must have knowledge of state and federal regulations • Must have basic troubleshooting skills • Must be able to back trailers in and out of receiving docks as well as service bays in the shop. • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. • Ability to write simple correspondence. • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Must pass substance abuse screening (as a safety sensitive employee subject to random substance abuse screening under company policy) • Must have the ability to work independently; pay attention to minute details; be organized with ability to prioritize and complete tasks; bring energy to the position and be internally inspired using his or her initiative; be punctual and dependable; work with others. • Ability to successfully complete maintenance logs and demonstrate basic math skills.

Qualifications and Requirements: Required: • Driver is 23 years or older — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (1) • Read and speak English sufficiently to converse with general public and comprehend DOT and OSHA regulations — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (2) • No serious moving violation (excessive speeding over 15 mph) or DUI in the previous 5 years • Must have complete set of mechanic's tools • Ability to pass a fit for duty test to meet minimum physical demands of the job Certificates, Licenses, Registration • Valid Alaska Class A CDL with TX endorsement • Valid medical card — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (4) Preferred: • Fleet maintenance experience preferred • Minimum of 2 years truck and trailer maintenance experience

The performance of this position requires exposure to the out-of-doors (sometimes in extreme weather conditions) and shop areas, where certain areas require the use of personal protective equipment such as a reflective vest, steel-toed boots, safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection.

Physical Demands: Individuals may need to sit or stand as needed. May require walking primarily on a level surface for periodic periods throughout the day. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required throughout the workday. Proper lifting techniques required.
