Maintenance I

The Maintenance Worker I performs entry-level maintenance and repair tasks, assisting in the upkeep of hospital facilities. This position focuses on general maintenance, basic carpentry, and repair work under supervision. The role contributes to a safe and well-maintained environment for staff, patients, and visitors. On-call duty is required on a rotating schedule to ensure availability for emergency maintenance requests outside of regular working hours.

Directly responsible to the Maintenance Manager

Indirectly responsible to the Director of Facilities.

Receives daily guidance and mentorship from Lead Maintenance Worker.

Works closely with fellow maintenance staff, hospital personnel, patients, and visitors.

Works in the general hospital setting. May be exposed to blood, body fluids, or tissues as well as patients in varying stages of infectious states. Electrical, chemical, mechanical, environmental, and physical hazards exist in everyday operations.

• Assist with general maintenance tasks including repairs, installations, and minor equipment troubleshooting under the supervision of senior staff.
• Perform basic carpentry tasks, such as repairing doors, windows, and minor structural repairs, ensuring hospital standards are maintained.
• Carry out basic repairs and preventive maintenance on hospital infrastructure and equipment.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, including safe storage of tools and materials.
• Adhere to safety standards and regulations to ensure the well-being of staff and visitors.
• Collaborate with team members to complete projects and respond to maintenance requests efficiently.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

• The Mission, Vision, and Values of Northern Inyo Healthcare District;
• NIHD policies and procedures, including Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and Confidentiality standards;
• Basic principles of general maintenance and repairs.
• Safety protocols related to maintenance work, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Basic carpentry techniques and tools.
• Proper procedures for handling and operating tools and equipment.
• Occupational safety standards (e.g., OSHA guidelines).

Skills/Abilities to:

• Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with NIHD staff and the public;
• Establish and maintain professional working relationships with NIHD staff at all levels as well as the public;
• Develop and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, and good judgment.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team under supervision.
• Skill in using basic hand and power tools (e.g., hammers, screwdrivers, drills).
• Ability to troubleshoot and perform basic repairs on mechanical and structural systems.
• Ability to read and follow instructions, including basic blueprints or maintenance manuals.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with team members and supervisors.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
• Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
• Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy objects, working in confined spaces, and standing for extended periods.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

• At least one year of experience in maintenance, repair, or related fields.

Education:

• High School Diploma or GED.

Certification:

• Valid California driver's license with a clean driving record.
• Forklift Operator Certification within the first six months of employment.
