School Resource Officer

Salary range: Up to $22.50/hour (depending on experience) Department: Sheriff Hours: Full-Time Job Description: A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a career law enforcement officer, with sworn authority, versed/trained in community-oriented policing, familiar with departmental operations and assigned by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office to work in collaboration with school districts in the County of Platte. SRO’s are visible, active law enforcement figures; student mentors, crisis intervention counselors, classroom curriculum instructors, and community resource developers. The SRO’s do not serve as the school disciplinarian and act as positive role models.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION

Successful performance of this position involves a variety of typical duties (as listed below). Is directly responsible to work within the chain of command for the department. Performs related duties and other responsibilities as assigned by the Sheriff or his designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge Maintains knowledge of current criminal and civil federal, state and municipal law as well as binding case law. Maintains knowledge of PCSO policy and directives. Maintains knowledge of PCSO-SRO Standard Operating Procedures and training. Maintains knowledge of NASRO (National Association of School Resource Officers). Maintains knowledge of school district/school campus protocols and procedures. Maintains knowledge of NIMS/ICS. Maintains knowledge of “Law Related Education” operations as well as other educational curriculums. Maintain knowledge of “Restorative Justice” practices. Maintain knowledge of CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). Skills Proficiency in the use of firearms, arrest control, and less lethal devices and techniques. Proficiency to operate a motor vehicle safely under normal and adverse conditions. Communicate with other sworn and civilian employees and supervisors of this or outside jurisdictions via radio, in person, telephone or electronic communication. Strong interpersonal and managerial skills. Skill in customer relations, crisis communications management, public speaking, and media relations. Proficiency in operating department computer systems and programs (MDC, Spillman, etc.). Skill in the use of windows-based programs. Abilities Ability to act as “Incident Supervisor” as warranted or in the event of an active critical incident until relieved. Ability to communicate with diverse segments of the public, especially as it relates to the SRO dynamic. Implement student/victim advocacy and community resource development as warranted by NASRO protocols. Maintain conduct in compliance with Platte County Sheriff’s Office and School District Memorandum of Understanding Agencies Operations Contract. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Platte County Sheriff’s Office and School District employees. Ability to work independently and with minimal to moderate supervision. Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.
