Labor and Delivery - Charge Nurse Full Time 7:00p - 7:30a

Description Seeking an experienced Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse for a Full‑time Charge Nurse for our Labor and Delivery unit. Will work three 12‑hour shifts each week from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. with a share of weekend and holiday shifts. Job Summary Additional Charge Nurse-specific duties and professional development requirements. Essential Functions Coordinates and provides direct patient care in accordance with accepted nursing standards while utilizing the nursing process. Makes frequent patient rounds to assure quality, customer service and appropriateness of patient care; identifies improvement areas and plans changes. Prepares patient care assignments considering staff skill mix, employee competence and patient acuity. Assures a safe patient care environment and coordinates maintenance and environmental health needs for the department. Ensures daily reports and records related to the unit operations are complete and accurate per shift. Provides support for appropriate patient/family teaching, discharge planning and phone calls. Cooperates with instructor(s) to implement and evaluate students’ clinical experience; provides a department environment conducive to future student recruitment. Participates in the interview process for applicants. Coaches, counsels, mentors and evaluates clinical staff under the guidance of the unit manager/ director. Provides input into the staffing schedule development; collaborates with the unit manager to forecast scheduling deficits and implement corrective action. Provides orientation of new employees while adhering to payroll and scheduling policies; collaborates with CNS to arrange orientation and preceptor schedules. Serves as a mentor to staff; actively participates in preceptor duties as appropriate. Supports new hires/orientees by ensuring reasonable patient assignments and keeping them with a preceptor during shifts. Conducts unit huddles, briefs and de‑briefs every shift to support staff. Collaborates with unit management to develop and achieve departmental goals and objectives around all hospital pillars. Maintains staffing hours within productivity standards for the shift. Participates in the budget process by providing input into departmental needs and implementing the approved operational budget. Provides cost‑saving suggestions to the Department Manager. Identifies opportunities for improved services and patient‑care quality; actively participates in PI activities and promotes staff involvement in evidence‑based practices. Monitors compliance with documentation, metrics, quality and performance standards; engages in staff education. Uses a communication style that promotes positive professional behavior (TeamSTEPPS Model) and SBAR format. Engages in unit efforts to promote staff retention and morale while ensuring standards of behavior. Delegates effectively to facilitate staff ownership of department successes. Participates and/or leads clinical task forces, special projects and unit huddles. Plans for professional development and continuing education; completes required education and competency requirements. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to use technology and equipment to perform job duties. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Proper body mechanics when handling patients, supplies and equipment. Ability to handle a physically demanding environment. Skills to perform all job duties for the age‑specific patient population served by the department. Ability to keep patient and employee information confidential. Knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan; ability to assess patient status and provide appropriate care per unit policies and procedures. Ability to plan and direct staff work activities to achieve organizational, unit, shift and quality goals; determine effective use of resources for fiscal stewardship. Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required Registered nurse licensed in the State of Maryland. BSN or BSN completion within 5 years of starting the position. Current certification in CPR and NRP and C‑EFM (must obtain within 1 yr if not already certified). Clinical competency in the department area; at least 2 years of relevant experience. Achievement of specialty certification after 2 years of clinical experience or within 1 yr in the Charge Nurse role. At least 3 years of postpartum/antepartum nursing experience; 1 year of charge nurse experience preferred. Physical Demands Medium‑Heavy Work Lifting up to 75 pounds on an infrequent basis (less than one lift every three minutes) and/or carrying up to 35 pounds while walking; pushing or pulling up to 115 pounds infrequently, and greater than 115 pounds occasionally (no more than once per hour).
