Where You Will Work: Gainesville Operations Center 5301 NE 39 Avenue Gainesville, FL 32609 Your Specific Responsibilities: Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment. Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision. Assists in maintaining a chemical herbicide program along highway rights-of way. Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs. Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques.
- Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
- Skilled in operating and performing pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
- Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
- Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges, and/or other highway structures.
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, crawl, or bend on a frequent basis.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
- Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
- Due to the nature of this position, incumbent must respond to emergencies. While on duty status, the position's incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety sensitive functions.
- The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
- Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it. Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position. This position will be required to respond before, during, and following emergency situations.
- A Class "E" Driver's License is required at time of hire. A CDL Class "B" License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class "B" License with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
- three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
- any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
- a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
- a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.
