Soils Technician

Job Title: Soils Technician Job Summary: Gregg Drilling is looking for a Soils Technician for their Northen California office, based in Benicia, CA. This position is a mix of field work and office work. The candidate will carry out field assignments that involve use of in-situ testing equipment (pressure meter, hammer energy calibration, dilatometer testing and vane shear testing). In-situ testing will generally be done in combination with drilling and/or CPT activities. The candidate will be responsible for collecting field data and then be responsible for data processing and reporting. The job will involve some travel within California and the surrounding Western states. Duties/Responsibilities
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to indoor and outdoor weather conditions and other elements prevalent at the time. Field work often includes uneven and slippery outdoor surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is typical of machinery noise which can be distracting and loud at times. May be exposed to dust, and fluctuation in outside temperatures.

- Perform in-situ testing equipment (pressuremeter, hammer energy calibration, dilatometer and vane shear testing) setup, calibration, maintenance, and minor repairs.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections and establish control zones.
- Collect and monitor field data with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Follow all company and site-specific safety policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to operate in-situ testing equipment, including pressure meter, hammer energy calibration system, dilatometer and vane shear testing equipment
- Direct experience with in-situ testing equipment is not required - we will train the right person
- Experience with installation of vibrating wire piezometers, extensometers and inclinometers is a plus
- Experience with geophysical testing/logging is a plus
- Candidate should have some experience with general civil engineering testing equipment - experience with lab testing or field testing are both a plus
- Candidate may also be trained on cone penetration testing operations.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience with Civil engineering field testing (examples: nuclear gauge testing, compaction testing, concrete testing)
- Environmental drilling experience a plus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk, use hands to finger, handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; bending or crouching; talk or hear.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Bending or standing as necessary.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to maneuver in small areas
- Ability to lift up 30+ pounds throughout the day
- Required to wear protective and safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and hard hats
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
