About the Department of Supportive Oncology

The Department of Supportive Oncology at Atrium Health Levine Cancer is a nationally and internationally recognized, multidisciplinary department dedicated to optimizing quality of life, function, and support for patients with cancer and their families. The Department integrates oncology palliative medicine, cancer rehabilitation, psycho oncology, integrative oncology, nutrition, survivorship, patient navigation, and senior oncology into a unified, patient centered model of care. It is widely regarded as a world class model for supportive care delivery, education, and leadership development in modern oncology.

Position Summary

The Supportive Oncology Fellow is a physician trainee enrolled in a one-year advanced fellowship within the Department of Supportive Oncology at Atrium Health Levine Cancer. The fellowship prepares physicians for leadership roles in supportive oncology through advanced, multidisciplinary training focused on comprehensive, person-centered cancer care across the cancer continuum.

Highlights About the Opportunity
  • Primarily outpatient clinical role in oncology palliative medicine, functioning as an attending physician with faculty mentorship.
    Some inpatient consultative cancer rehabilitation experience.
    Monday through Friday schedule (generally 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.) with protected research and academic time.
    No call responsibilities.
    Opportunity to practice at regional cancer sites within the Levine Cancer network.
    Participation in multidisciplinary supportive oncology services including rehabilitation, psycho-oncology, integrative oncology, nutrition, survivorship, navigation, and senior oncology.
    Opportunities for teaching, scholarship, quality improvement, and program development within a large academic cancer program.
Training and Experience Requirements
  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
    Completion of an ACGME accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship or equivalent training.
    Active medical license or eligible for a full, unrestricted license in the state of North Carolina.
Appointment Details
  • Fellowship duration: One year (12 months).
    Start date: Typically aligned with the academic year (July 1); off-cycle start dates may be accommodated for a full 12-month training period.
    Compensation and benefits aligned with standard Graduate Medical Education (GME) fellowship stipend and benefits policies.
