Database Reliability Engineer

As a Database Reliability Engineer, you'll improve the Assurant database technology ecosystem, database efficiency, and oversee Assurant's production database systems. Assurant’s database layer supports millions of transactions on a daily basis, which means efficient, well-tuned systems have to be the default when it comes to deploying new queries, evaluating indexes and managing our SQL Server platform. The Database Reliability team is the backbone that supports Assurant as we continue to grow our Lender Placed Insurance platform and support Fortune 50 Financial clients.

What You'll Do

• Develop and refine processes to review overall database system performance
• Assist in performance testing with our team of DevOps/SRE engineers
• Plan for future growth capacity
• Participate in on-call / incident management schedule
• Assist with continued client migrations from legacy data centers to Azure
• Partner with the Enterprise engineering organization to help support application development teams
• Train and collaborate with other departments on how to run production database systems and write effective queries, indexes, partitions, filegroups

Who You Are

You love database and query design, but have an even greater love for efficiency and tuning. You make decisions based on data and are not afraid of experimenting to get the information you need. You also have the following:

• At least 7+ years of experience in Data Engineering
• Experience in the last 2 years with Large scale Data Migration
• Passion for craftsmanship and product
• Well-considered opinions about how reliable database systems should work, and hold yourself and your code to a high standard
• SQL Server experience, primarily 2019 and 2016, including high availability and DR solutions
• Azure experience, including Azure SQL
• Nice to have Azure experience including Cosmos Db, Redis, Synapse, Data Lake, Service Bus, Event Grid
• Experience with VMs, containers, and serverless compute platforms
• Experience with operating systems (primarily Windows 2019), configuration management, and "Infrastructure as Code" IaaS, using Terraform
• Experience with Scripting in Powershell, T-SQL, YML
• Experience with continuous integration, delivery, testing, and code deployment pipelines (using tools such as Azure DevOps and Octopus)
• Experience with extracting useful telemetry data to address issues and forecast future growth using tools like Datadog, SolarWinds DPA, Dynatrace, Nimbus
• A focus on improving system architecture, diagnosing shortcomings and implementing recommendations based on analyzed evidence

Required Skills

• Moving from SQL 2014 to SQL 2019 on-prem to then eventually have a cloud type migration
• Writing queries, will have the best understanding of the database and how it functions
• Someone who thinks about data problems and can come up with solutions quickly by integrating automation functions
• Creating data pipelines and PowerShell scripting (bash, sql)
• Azure, Cosmos, Redis (pluses)
• Top skills: large scale data migration (3 billion in one table), solarwinds, powershell or bash, strong t-sql
• Immediate need is on-prem to on-prem, but cloud would ultimately be helpful since that's the long term goal
• Wants someone to challenge the status quo to look at what the enterprise is doing and make suggestions
