Executive Director

A well-established nonprofit senior living organization is seeking an accomplished Executive Director to provide strategic and operational leadership for a senior living community in San Francisco.

The Executive Director has overall responsibility for community operations, resident experience, financial performance, regulatory compliance, workforce leadership, and long-term planning. This individual will lead a multidisciplinary team and work closely with residents, organizational leadership, and community partners to maintain a high quality living and care environment.

The successful candidate will combine strong business and operational judgment with a resident centered leadership approach. This role requires an executive who can build effective teams, strengthen organizational culture, manage complex operations, and successfully navigate the regulatory requirements associated with senior living and healthcare services.

Depending upon community needs and licensing requirements, the Executive Director may serve as the licensed Nursing Home Administrator or fulfill designated administrative responsibilities in accordance with applicable California regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Executive & Operational Leadership

• Provide overall leadership and direction for the day-to-day operations of the community.
• Develop and execute short and long-term operating plans that support organizational priorities and the evolving needs of residents.
• Establish measurable goals and performance expectations across departments and monitor progress against key operational indicators.
• Identify opportunities to improve service delivery, operational efficiency, resident satisfaction, and organizational effectiveness.
• Lead major initiatives involving programs, staffing, facilities, capital improvements, and community operations.
• Partner with organizational leadership and other communities to identify effective practices and implement appropriate operational improvements.
• Ensure policies, procedures, and operating practices are effectively implemented throughout the community.

People & Culture

• Build, lead, and develop a high-performing, service-oriented leadership team.
• Maintain overall accountability for workforce planning, recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, employee development, and retention.
• Create an environment that encourages collaboration, accountability, open communication, and continuous improvement.
• Coach and develop department leaders while establishing clear expectations for performance and service.
• Support leadership development and succession planning to strengthen organizational continuity.
• Promote positive relationships among employees, residents, families, and organizational leadership.

Resident Experience & Community Relations

• Foster a welcoming, engaging, and respectful environment that supports residents' quality of life, independence, dignity, and well being.
• Develop strong relationships with residents and resident leadership groups to understand priorities, address concerns, and support community initiatives.
• Ensure resident feedback is incorporated into operational planning and service improvements.
• Provide leadership related to admissions, occupancy, resident services, and overall community experience.
• Maintain productive relationships with families, community organizations, professional partners, volunteers, regulatory agencies, and other external stakeholders.
• Provide overall financial stewardship for the community, including annual budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and expense management.
• Monitor financial and operational performance and implement corrective strategies when necessary.
• Evaluate staffing, programs, services, capital expenditures, and operational investments from both financial and resident-service perspectives.
• Partner with organizational leadership to develop long-range operating and capital priorities.
• Ensure resources are deployed effectively to support operational excellence and long-term sustainability.

Regulatory Compliance, Safety & Risk Management

• Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements governing senior living, residential care, and skilled nursing operations.
• Ensure appropriate systems are in place to protect resident health, safety, rights, and well-being.
• Provide executive oversight of community risk management, loss prevention, emergency preparedness, workplace safety, and accident and illness prevention programs.
• Ensure appropriate investigation, documentation, follow-up, and corrective action related to safety and operational concerns.
• Maintain readiness for regulatory surveys, inspections, audits, and other compliance reviews.
• Promote a culture of quality, safety, accountability, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.

Strategic Leadership & Quality Improvement

• Use operational, financial, workforce, quality, and resident-experience data to evaluate performance and guide decision-making.
• Lead quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.
• Identify emerging operational challenges and develop proactive solutions.
• Participate as a member of the organization's senior leadership structure and contribute to broader strategic initiatives, committees, and special projects.

Knowledge, Skills & Leadership Capabilities

The successful candidate will bring:

• Strong knowledge of senior living and/or healthcare operations, including applicable California regulatory requirements.
• Working knowledge of Title 22, OBRA, and regulations governing skilled nursing facilities, residential care settings, and services for older adults.
• Understanding of California requirements applicable to continuing care retirement communities and/or Life Plan Communities.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex, multidisciplinary operations.
• Strong financial acumen, including budget development, forecasting, financial analysis, and expense management.
• Proven ability to recruit, develop, motivate, and retain high-performing teams.
• Strong communication, relationship-building, conflict-resolution, and organizational skills.
• Ability to analyze complex information, assess alternatives and risks, and make sound business and operational decisions.
• Demonstrated commitment to serving older adults with dignity, respect, and an understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with aging.
• Ability to successfully balance resident needs, regulatory requirements, workforce considerations, financial objectives, and organizational priorities.

Qualifications

• Approximately 8–10 years of progressively responsible administrative and leadership experience, preferably within senior living, healthcare, skilled nursing, Life Plan/CCRC, or a similarly complex service environment.
• Significant experience leading multidisciplinary teams and complex operations.
• Previous executive or senior-level leadership experience within a senior living environment strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated responsibility for financial management, workforce leadership, regulatory compliance, and operational performance.
• California Nursing Home Administrator (NHA) license may be required, or the successful candidate must be eligible and willing to obtain the appropriate license based on community requirements.
• California Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) Administrator Certification may also be required based on the scope of the position.

Supervisory Responsibility

The Executive Director holds overall leadership responsibility for a substantial community workforce and leads operations both directly and through department heads and other managers.

This position has executive-level accountability for workforce strategy, hiring, leadership development, employee performance, organizational culture, regulatory compliance, resident experience, financial performance, and overall community operations.
