This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine Degree obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed Current – full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification Approved residencies: (1) ACGME core specialty; they are to have a scope of practice allowing certain restricted duties under supervision Proficiency in spoken and written English Reference: For more information on this qualification standard – please visit Physical Requirements: In accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019 Duties The VA New York Harbor Healthcare System serves Veterans via 3 medical centers and 2 community‑based outpatient clinics The Margaret Cochran VA Campus is a high‑complexity facility located in Manhattan with a major educational affiliation with NYU Grossman School of Medicine The Brooklyn Campus provides acute inpatient medical and surgical services with a major affiliation with SUNY-Health Science Center – Brooklyn The St. Alban’s campus houses a community living center and outpatient services VA New York Harbor Manhattan Campus is looking for an Attending Physician in Hospital Medicine in New York, NY The Hospitalist physician position includes an appointment as New York University Faculty, providing education to medical students, residents, and other learners The Staff Hospitalist is responsible for comprehensive inpatient care of hospitalized Veterans – admission, evaluation, management, discharge, and medical consultation Core privileges include performing history and physical exam, forming differential diagnoses, ordering and interpreting labs and diagnostic tests (plain films, ECGs), developing and implementing treatment plans, and ordering subspecialty consultations Deliver up to eight months of annual inpatient service coverage within the Hospital Medicine Section in conjunction with NYU Internal Medicine Residents All clinical care involves resident supervision Ensure timely and efficient transitions of care in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams Assist appropriate triage of patients referred to the inpatient medicine service from emergency departments – partnering VA hospitals and civilian hospitals Supervise and teach residents and medical students, including formal teaching time and trainee evaluation Position includes New York University faculty appointment and on‑tour time designated for self‑directed scholarly work (expected as part of dual VA and NYU appointments) Participate in section meetings, quality improvement initiatives, committee activities, and other efforts supporting VA NYH’s mission Contribute to continuity, stability, and efficiency of inpatient operations through effective clinical decision‑making, accurate documentation, and communication Demonstrate continued effort to stay abreast of emerging literature and guidelines Must be board‑certified or board‑eligible in Internal Medicine Respond to utilization management queries in a timely and respectful manner Recent repeated experience in paracentesis and point‑of‑care ultrasound preferred but not required VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package: Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – student loan reimbursement (up to $200 000, one to five years) Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, possible 5 days paid CME absence) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting), federal 401(k) with up to 5% employer contribution Health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care insurance;
