Apprentice Electric Line Technician - Pay Range (hourly): Starting rate of $44.19, with wage progression based on apprenticeship level and successful advancement through the City's apprenticeship program. Current apprentice rates progress up to $65.95 upon successful completion of the 4-year (four-year) program.

Electric Line Technician - Salary Range (hourly): $43.96 - $65.95 (depending on qualifications and experience)

Participates in the City of Aspen's 4-year (four-year) registered Electric Line Technician Apprenticeship Program and learns the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's electric distribution system through classroom instruction and supervised on-the-job training. Develops knowledge and skills necessary to become a journey-level line worker while progressing through structured apprenticeship requirements.

Performs journey-level electrical linework involving the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's electrical distribution system. Independently performs technical work on energized and de-energized systems, analyzes system issues, responds to service interruptions, and provides technical expertise in support of City electric operations. Serves as a resource to apprentices and other staff through training, mentoring, and guidance.

Learns to safely perform technical work in the operation and maintenance of the primary and secondary elements of the electric distribution system.

  • Assists with the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, including cold and energized (hot) lines.
  • Assists with electrical service, meter, and transformer installations.
  • Learns meter inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and repair procedures.
  • Responds to customer service work orders as assigned.
  • Reviews development plans under the direction of an Electric Line Technician.
  • Assists with establishing power for special community events.
  • Assists other utility and City departments with electrical work.

Assists with the installation, maintenance, and repair of City streetlights and associated infrastructure.

Learns utility locate procedures in accordance with Colorado 811 requirements.

Learns the safe operation of utility equipment, including bucket trucks, trenchers, backhoes, cranes, and related equipment.

Participates in loading, unloading, maintenance, and care of equipment and vehicles.

Assists customers and City staff with electric-related inquiries.

Learns and follows OSHA requirements, utility safety standards, and City policies.

Performs skilled technical work in operation and maintenance of the primary and secondary elements of the electric distribution system.

  • Must have general and specific knowledge of equipment and operate equipment in order to construct, maintain, and repair electrical systems, both cold and energized (hot) lines.
  • Installs electrical services, meters, transformers, and related appurtenances.
  • Performs meter inspections, installations, repairs, and trouble shoots problems.
  • Tests meters to ensure accurate tracking of power consumption.
  • Sets priorities for response to customer service request work orders.
  • Maintains records of electrical system maintenance failures, duration of failures, and customers affected.
  • Works with electric staff on the proper and safe way to perform their duties, including adhering to working clearances for all voltages.
  • Reviews development plans to ensure construction complies with standards. Inspects work for compliance with approved plans.
  • Assists in establishing power for special community events by performing electrical work and analyzing availability and capacity of power supply.
  • Assists other utility and city departments with electrical work.
  • Directs, guides, and trains personnel in lower-level electric line worker positions. All training should contain emphasis on safe working practices.

Works with Electric Superintendent to schedule and repair existing streetlights.

  • Installs and maintains city streetlights. Digs trenches to install raceway for electrical wires which feed the streetlights. Sets tubing and concrete pedestals for new street lighting.

Locates electrical distribution lines in advance of expected excavation work by the department and private contractors, in accordance with positive response requirements of the 8-1-1 locating of underground facilities regulations, and establishes measures for the protection of buried lines and equipment.

Supervises the loading and unloading of equipment to ensure proper handling of materials and that safety precautions are observed.

  • Operates trencher and backhoe to install underground cables and backfill ditches; hi-ranger bucket truck for repair and hookup of high voltage lines, etc.; and crane truck.
  • Responsible for the proper use and care of all vehicles and equipment used in line work and under the superintendent's direction, including scheduling the equipment for maintenance.
  • Orders small line items such as street light bulbs, safety equipment, tools, etc.
  • Instructs and trains new linemen and apprentices in the safe use of tools and equipment.

Safely performs duties associated with high-risk industrial facility, field, and project work (as recommended by industry best practices and OSHA where applicable) including, but not limited to, high-voltage equipment, machinery, and confined spaces.

Engages on electric system issues including responding to external customer concerns and internal customer assistance.

Communication: Knowledge of effective and appropriate communication. Ability to use knowledge effectively in various contexts which may require oral, written, visual and non-verbal communication. Ability to exchange information and effectively communicate with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and the public. Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.

Interpersonal: Works to develop strength in interpersonal skills. Has the ability to work well with diverse groups of people, both inside and outside the organization.

Technology: Demonstrates technology skills sufficient for the nature and level of position. Demonstrates a willingness to learn new technologies and transition job duties accordingly to support technological advances and innovation.

Equipment Operation: Able to use equipment, materials, methods, and tools involved in the maintenance and or repair of electricity systems, networks, and related appurtenances.

Safety: Knowledge of codes, policies, procedures, and practices to promote safety in utility scale electrical operations.
