Patient Care Associate – MSH GP8W Neuro Stepdown PT (Days, Weekends Only: Saturday/Sunday) As an integral part of the clinical care team, the Patient Care Associate supports the registered nurse in providing patient‑focused care within the Specialty Service. This role involves a wide range of activities that promote safe, clean environments and meet the physical, psychosocial, and educational needs of patients across all age groups. Responsibilities Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical, technical, service, and administrative tasks. Provides care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of patients served. Performs and records patient vital signs—including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations—and documents intake/output and other data. Obtains pain scale ratings as a fifth vital sign in all areas except Pediatrics. Performs clinical procedures such as specimen collection (blood glucose, venipuncture, EKG), compression device application, post‑mortem care, and skin integrity maintenance. Sets up for selected procedures and assists RN's accordingly. Assists patients with activities of daily living: feeding, bathing, toileting, orientation to the clinical environment, ambulation, and all levels of mobilization. Assists with dietary functions—delivering and collecting patient trays, providing menu assistance, mixing nutritional supplements, reporting eating pattern variations to RN/Dietitian, and maintaining accurate, timely transmission of dietary orders. Maintains a safe, clean, and functional environment: ensures comfortable patient movement, room and bed‑stripping, trash removal, and reports plant and equipment issues. Performs on‑to‑one or close observation status for safety, elopement risk, or suicide prevention. Maintains isolation status for patients under RN direction according to procedure guidelines. Conducts scheduled hourly care checks/rounding with emphasis on toileting needs, comfort, positioning, and pain awareness; notifies RN if rounding is incomplete. Utilizes the Vocera system/Mount Sinai phone according to sign‑in/sign‑out protocol when activated. Generates reports and performs other duties as assigned. Promotes cultural sensitivity: is open and responsive to diverse backgrounds, respects each patient’s unique needs, beliefs, and diversity, and incorporates these into care delivery. Greets visitors, answers phones promptly and courteously, and escorts visitors to appropriate areas, providing information as needed. Answers the patient call system and refers calls to appropriate staff. Transports patients to stretchers or wheelchairs as required and delivers and collects trays at bedside. Delivers flowers to patients, strips units/cubicles, performs emergency clean‑up and transport, and conducts discharge bed‑making. Manages specimens, updates communication board/discharge log, assembles medical records, and updates Admission/Transfer/Discharge systems and processes. Maintains supplies, cares for equipment, participates in departmental performance improvement activities, and upholds patient and employee confidentiality. Observes healthcare system compliance policies and participates in the development of other staff members. Meets regulatory, licensure, and annual health assessment requirements, identifies learning strengths and needs, and utilizes learning resources. Shows a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude toward patients, families, significant others, and all hospital staff, displaying courtesy, tact, and patience during interactions. Qualifications High School Diploma (or equivalent). Certificate of completion of a medical assistant/patient care assistant program (equivalent) with skills in venipuncture and EKG. Interpersonal skills to communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the Specialty Service. Documentation of Medical Assistant/Patient Care Associate training. Three to nine months of healthcare experience preferred. Ability to set priorities, problem‑solve, use proper judgment in difficult situations, and remain flexible. Strong oral and written English communication skills. Physical stamina and manual dexterity necessary for varied tasks and skills within the assignment area. American Heart Association Heartsaver or BLS certification. Compensation Salary range: $27.85 – $29.88 per hour.
