Custodian Substitutes - Daily & On Call

Job Description Title of Position: Custodian Substitute School Year: 2026-2027 Compensation: $18.50 per hour Job Goal: To maintain the physical school plant and grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may be made at all times. Reports To: Head Custodian in Charge for day‑to‑day work situations, Supervisor of Custodians for overall custodial functions, and Building Principal. Qualifications Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial or janitorial work and safety precautions. Knowledge of proper use of custodial supplies (synthetic detergents, soaps, scouring powders, waxes, etc.) and techniques for various floors, walls, toilets, furniture, and equipment. Knowledge of use, operation and care of custodial equipment (vacuum cleaners, floor machines, floor brushes, sweeping mops, lawn mower, line trimmer, etc.). Knowledge of care of buildings and property (grounds, walks, lawns, shrubbery, etc.). Skill in use of hand tools, minor adjustment and repair of furniture, changing light bulbs, and working electrical systems for lighting areas. Knowledge of fire and accident prevention in public buildings and operation of hand extinguishers. Ability to follow written and oral instructions in English; bilingual preferred (Spanish or Portuguese). Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships. Physical fitness for manual tasks, ability to lift over 40 pounds, climb step ladders. Appearance neat; honesty, dependability, respect, integrity. Attention to detail and physical/mental capabilities to perform tasks. Alternatives to these qualifications may be considered by the Superintendent of Schools. Performance Responsibilities Participate in sweeping, dusting, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, polishing, and minor repairs for floors, walls, windows, light fixtures, toilets, washbowls, furniture, and other furnishings. Clean, service and supply restrooms. Maintain school grounds: mowing, edging, sweeping walks, removing snow and ice. Collect and empty trash. Eliminate fire hazards and prevent accidents. Address safety/security concerns and report as necessary. Perform other duties assigned by the Principal, Head Custodian, or Custodial Supervisor.
