Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgeon-Faculty (MD/DO)
The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) invites applications for a fellowship-trained Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgeon to join our growing multidisciplinary program. The selected candidate will become part of a dynamic academic environment comprised of 12 neurosurgeons representing diverse subspecialty expertise, supported by robust clinical, research, and educational infrastructure across the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health.
The department provides comprehensive neurosurgical care, including:
Aneurysms and cerebrovascular disease
Brain tumors
Epilepsy and functional neurosurgery
Spine and head trauma
Hydrocephalus
Pituitary and skull base surgery
Spinal neurosurgery
Pediatric and fetal neurosurgery
The department has experienced significant growth in recent years, including the recruitment of surgeon-scientists and master clinicians, as well as the addition of a highly skilled multimedia medical illustration team. A new neurosurgical outpatient center has been established within the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC). UNC Health has invested in advanced technologies, including laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT), robotic platforms, and high- and low-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU/LIFU). The department has also launched new programs in peripheral nerve and spinal oncology. Research and philanthropic support continue to expand, with $2.52M in grant funding and $2.95M in philanthropic contributions. The department has also demonstrated improved performance in Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research rankings and U.S. News & World Report rankings.
Primary Responsibilities
Provide surgical care for patients with epilepsy and movement disorders in close collaboration with neurology specialists
Participate actively in the education and mentorship of residents, fellows, and medical students
Contribute to the department's research mission, including:
Advancing understanding of neurological disease mechanisms
Exploring the biologic and physiologic basis of neurosurgical interventions
Developing and refining surgical techniques for epilepsy and functional disorders
- Engage in interdisciplinary collaborations across UNC's neuroscience, imaging, and engineering communities
A research support package, including start-up resources and protected time, will be provided based on the candidate's experience, academic achievements, and funding history.
Qualifications
MD or MD/PhD (or equivalent) from an accredited institution
Board-certified or board-eligible by the American Board of Neurological Surgery
Fellowship training in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery
Eligibility for medical licensure in the state of North Carolina
Ability to obtain credentials to practice within the UNC Health Care System
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with neurosurgical, critical care, and multidisciplinary clinical teams
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated expertise in the evaluation and surgical treatment of epilepsy
Experience with microelectrode-guided deep brain stimulation (DBS); experience with asleep DBS preferred
Strong clinical track record and commitment to academic productivity
For senior candidates, a history of extramural funding, innovation, and impactful scholarly publications
