S.E.T., Inc is a heavy highway and civil contractor performing roadway reconstruction, bridge work, underground utilities, grading, drainage, and site development throughout Ohio and Western Pennsylvania and growing. Our work includes ODOT, PennDOT, county, municipal, and private projects — including prevailing wage / Davis-Bacon work. We're hiring Construction Laborers to run with our crews this season and beyond!
Job Summary
The Pipelayer is responsible for the installation, alignment, and connection of underground pipe used in water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage systems. This role works closely with equipment operators, laborers, and the crew foreman to ensure pipe is laid to grade, properly bedded, and connected according to plans and specifications. This is physically demanding, outdoor field work performed on active construction sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Lay and align sections of pipe (PVC, ductile iron, RCP, HDPE, and similar materials) in trenches according to blueprints, grade stakes, and laser/grade instruments.
- Prepare trench bedding and backfill in accordance with project specifications and safety standards.
- Connect, seal, and join pipe sections using appropriate couplings, gaskets, or fittings.
- Guide equipment operators (excavators, backhoes) during pipe placement and trench work using hand signals and clear communication.
- Install manholes, catch basins, valves, and other appurtenances as required.
- Check pipe grade and alignment using laser levels, string lines, or other survey equipment.
- Identify and mark utility conflicts; work safely around existing underground utilities.
- Perform trench safety procedures, including shoring, sloping, or shielding in compliance with OSHA excavation standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site; properly store and handle materials and equipment.
- Perform general laborer duties as needed, including shoveling, tamping, and material handling.
- Communicate effectively with the crew foreman and other trades regarding progress and site conditions.
Qualifications
Required
- Prior experience laying pipe on a construction site (utility, municipal, or heavy civil construction preferred).
- Working knowledge of trench safety practices and OSHA excavation requirements.
- Ability to read basic construction plans, grade stakes, and utility markings.
- Comfortable working in and around open trenches and heavy equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and varying site environments.
- Reliable transportation to job sites in the Greater Cleveland area.
- Valid driver’s license.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Experience with laser levels and grade-checking equipment.
- CDL (Class A or B).
- Confined space entry training.
- 2+ years of pipelaying or underground utility experience.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and up to 75–100 lbs occasionally with assistance.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined trench spaces for extended periods.
- Ability to climb in and out of trenches and excavations safely.
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, and precipitation.
