Job Description:

The Biological Scientist III position described herein performs research in the process development laboratory associated with the Powell Gene Therapy Center in the Department of Pediatrics. The incumbent will perform laboratory experiments using oncolytic and gene therapy applications and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to produce viral vectors at small- and medium-scale. Once trained, the individual in this position is expected to function under minimal supervision to perform work using established methods. The position requires work associated with live oncolytic viruses and gene therapy viral vector production, molecular biology, and cell maintenance.

This is a senior level Biological Scientist position associated with oncolytic virus and gene therapy vector production. The Biological Scientist is expected to be able to: (1) follow pre-established guidelines and procedures to maintain cell cultures, and produce viral vectors; (2) complete the execution of assigned experiments; (3) maintain accurate laboratory records, summaries, and notes; (4) present findings to the PI at laboratory meetings; (5) follow safety procedures associated with the laboratory; (6) and maintain a computer database.

The Biological Scientist III must be able to perform the following essential functions:

Oncolytic virus and gene therapy vector production:

Using adherent and suspension to produce viral vectors by various triple transfection and infection techniques. This will involve small-scale production and purification work associated with cell factory plasticware, and mid-scale production and purification work involving multiple cell factory plasticware, bioreactors, and downstream purification equipment. Additionally, this work will include the maintenance of various cell culture systems.

Product testing:

Product testing using standard infectious and viral genome quantification assays, as well as other assays associated with product quality will be performed.

Maintaining and updating laboratory notebooks and protocols

Expected Salary:

$73,000 - $80,000; commensurate with education and experience. 

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with five year of experience. Doctoral degree in biology or related field with two years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Working knowledge of basic laboratory techniques.
• Strong interest in virology, gene therapy, and translational research.
