THE ROLE

This position is responsible for overseeing several repair garages and staff statewide. Additional duties include: Scheduling and assigning assignments;Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and communicating with staff;Reviewing and evaluating the work of staff and making effective recommendations;Prioritizing production;Addressing personnel needs to meet staffing and training requirements, as well as inventory. In your daily operations, you will implement and effectively enforce the Department’s operations and mission, and incorporate appropriate labor relations and union contract language, department policies and procedures, and communicate effectively with staff and outside entities, both verbally and written.

REQUIREMENTS

*Candidates must hold a current and valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or B, with Tanker endorsement, in the "Licenses and Professional Certifications". Applicants invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the "tank endorsement," and valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at time of interview.Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are needed; this includes mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. EXAMPLES OF DUTIESSchedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; Provides staff training and assistance; Conducts performance evaluations; Determines priorities and plans area work; Establishes and maintains area procedures; Reviews all purchase requisitions and stores withdrawal reports; Develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards; Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; Prepares reports and correspondence; Inspects for the proper care and maintenance of Department of Transportation equipment and buildings; Checks servicing of equipment and makes spot checks of condition of equipment in use; Regulates flow of work by shifting repair jobs from one repair shop to another or arranging for commercial repair work when necessary and inspects such commercial repair work; Inspects building and premises for fire and safety hazards, checks location and condition of fire extinguishers, storage of parts and materials, cleanliness and general upkeep; Arranges for repairs and improvement of conditions where necessary, and inspects finished work; Inspects equipment to determine necessity of replacement; Assists in the development of specifications for new equipment and inspects and tests purchases; May, upon request, inspect and make recommendations on equipment for other State departments and municipalities; Periodically inspects state owned transportation equipment operated by private public transportation agencies; Participates in safety meetings; Performs related duties as required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITYConsiderable knowledge of the mechanisms and standard methods of repairing and adjusting automotive equipment and highway maintenance equipment; Considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; Ability to inspect and test new and overhauled equipment and shop repair equipment, including welding and cutting equipment, automotive testing equipment, and standard machine tools; utilize computer software;Supervisory ability.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE Seven (7) years of experience in the repair, maintenance, inspection and testing of automotive and highway maintenance equipment.
