What You Will Be Doing: As an Emergency Services Dispatcher 1 with the Alaska State Troopers, you will be expected to:

  • Maintain positivity and resiliency while providing support for the field enforcement units of the Department of Public Safety at the Alaska State Troopers Northern Operations Center.
  • Display professionalism, compassion, and support to all individuals contacted in the line of duty. This includes, but is not limited to, the public, field enforcement units, civilian staff, other agencies, and coworkers.
  • Answer emergency and non-emergency calls for service via radio and phone for areas throughout the State of Alaska.

The Working Conditions You Can Expect: The Emergency Services Dispatcher 1 position is based in Fairbanks, located at 1979 Peger Road in a secure facility. The work environment is fast-paced – we answer more than 135,000 calls per year. Each day is dynamic with the opportunity to interact with people from many different backgrounds and provide life-saving assistance in many challenging situations. You will be part of a team of dispatchers who truly are the heart of the telecommunications services provided by the Department of Public Safety.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Applicants with the ability to produce consistently high-quality work in an environment with numerous interruptions and rapidly shifting priorities
  • Applicants with the ability to work with confidential and sensitive information
  • Applicants who are willing to work shiftwork, weekends, holidays, and overtime
  • Applicants with the ability to operate multiple telephone lines
  • Applicants with exceptional critical thinking skills

Minimum Qualifications: Two years of work experience. This experience must include six months of experience that entails clerical tasks such as greeting clients, answering phones, typing, filing, sorting mail, entering data, receiving payments, making change, or maintaining logs. AND the ability to type at a net speed of 30 words per minute with no more than three errors per minute. OR any combination of education from an accredited college (three semester hours or four quarter hours equal one month of experience), vocational education (150 hours equal one month of experience), and/or work experience may substitute for up to 18 months of non-specific work experience. Special Note: Specific positions in this job class may require incumbents to be Emergency Medical Certified, Emergency Police Certified, or Emergency Fire Dispatch Certified. Shift work may be required. A background investigation will be required upon initial employment. This job class requires individuals to multitask and maintain emotional control and composure to work effectively during emergencies, crisis situations, and/or extremely stressful conditions.

  • A typing test demonstrating the ability to type 30 words per minute must be submitted with the application. There are many free websites where typing tests can be performed and recorded.

Background Check: This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.

Confidentiality Agreement: The successful candidate will be required to read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.

It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
