Bus Aide

Assist school bus drivers of students with special transportation needs.

Supervised by: Transportation Director

Purpose: Assisting in transporting students with special transportation needs to and from school, providing help to the bus driver, securing passengers in their seats, and assisting students boarding and leaving the school bus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ensure students board and depart the bus safely in an orderly manner.
• Assist students being loaded onto or off of the bus.
• Follow posted procedures for safely using the wheelchair lift when necessary.
• Assist with hygiene, physical, and/or medical needs.
• Follow student behavior intervention plans.
• Attend required training and professional development.
• Assist the bus driver in supervising students and maintaining discipline while displaying patience and understanding.
• Learn bus routes, schedules, and pickup points; be aware of route or bus stop changes, including student daycare arrangements.
• Assist substitute drivers with directions.
• Assist drivers in conducting bus evacuation drills.
• Assist drivers in maintaining a clean bus interior.
• Perform other workrelated duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

• Ability to assist students with patience and understanding
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality

Conditions of Employment:

• Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
• The successful candidate must submit to a pre-employment and routine physical examination.
• Certifications in CPR and First Aid

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

• Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, fumes, unpleasant odors, and loud noises.
• Light to moderate physical effort may involve squatting, stooping, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and lifting students into bus seats when needed.
• The work environment involves exposure to hazards or physical risks, requiring basic safety precautions.
