Afterschool STEM Instructor

Job Description

Job Description

STEM Instructor

iCode Westchase  ·  Tampa, FL 33635  ·  Part-Time, In-Person  ·  16.00–18.00/hour

Hours — please review before applying

Monday–Thursday: 4:30 PM – 7:15 PM

Saturdays: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM and/or 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

These are set class times. If they do not fit your schedule, this role is likely not the right match.

Why this role is different

This position places you in the classroom teaching technical subjects you already know — programming, game development, robotics, and computing fundamentals — to students in kindergarten through grade 12. This role is built for high school and college students who code, build robots, design games, or tinker with tech, and who want a paid, part-time job that puts those skills to work.

The curriculum is developed and provided by iCode; instructors deliver it rather than write it. In doing so, you build a capability few technical people have: explaining complex concepts clearly to an audience that does not share your background.

What you will actually teach

Our belt curriculum spans ten levels, K–12. You will start on the belts that match what you already know. Over time, you may teach any of these:

Please note you are not expected to know all of this on day one. We train you on the belts you will teach, and that training is paid.

• Scratch and block-based coding
• Game creation in Minecraft Education and Roblox (Lua)
• Python, from the basics up through data science
• Web development: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Robotics and making: VEX IQ, Arduino, drones, 3D design and 3D printing
• Advanced belts for experienced instructors: C#, Java, Unreal Engine, networking, and cybersecurity

Who we are looking for

Strong fit:

• Hands-on experience with coding, robotics, or game design, from classes, clubs, competitions, or your own projects
• Some experience working with kids: CS camp counselor, TA or learning assistant, FIRST/VEX robotics mentor, tutor, scouts, church or community youth programs.
• Comfortable with at least one or two of the topics above, and excited to learn more
• Able to explain a concept three different ways when the first two do not land
• Available during our class times: Monday–Thursday 4:30–7:15 PM and Saturdays 10 AM–12 PM and 1–3 PM

Also great, not required:

• You have built something you are proud of — a game, a bot, a site, a robot, an app. Bring it up.
• Experience with Unity, Unreal, Godot, or any game engine
• FIRST or VEX robotics, coding club, hackathons, ACM / IEEE / WiCS / NSBE, or a club where you mentored younger students

What you will do

• Teach scheduled classes and camps using the iCode curriculum
• Run an organized, high-energy classroom where every student is building something
• Track and report each student’s progress toward their next belt
• Tell us honestly what is landing in the curriculum and what is not

Compensation and schedule

Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour, set by technical depth and teaching experience. Part-time W-2 employee.

Schedule: Monday–Thursday 4:30–7:15 PM and Saturdays 10 AM–12 PM and 1–3 PM (see Hours above). We will work with you around exams, midterms, and finals.

Location: In person at iCode Westchase, 11669 W. Hillsborough Ave, Tampa, FL 33635 (Bayport Commons, next to Super Target).

What you get besides the paycheck

• Paid training across ten technical curricula — most of which you can honestly list on a résumé
• Real teaching and mentorship experience that stands out on college applications, internship applications, and future job interviews
• A real reference from a campus director who has watched you work, not a form letter
• A small team where a better idea about how to teach something actually gets used

Employment is contingent on a background check, as required for anyone working with minors. iCode Westchase is an equal opportunity employer.
