This is a unique physician executive leadership opportunity to influence the health, safety, and well-being of one of Arizona's largest healthcare workforces while providing strategic direction for a growing community-based Occupational Medicine platform.

With 90–95% dedicated administrative leadership time and only 5–10% clinical responsibilities , the Medical Director will have the opportunity to build programs, advance clinical best practices, influence systemwide policies, and introduce innovative approaches to occupational health and caregiver well-being.

The HonorHealth network includes nine acute care hospitals with more than 1,800 beds, over 100 ambulatory locations, and approximately 20 urgent care centers throughout the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.

The primary Employee Health office is located in desirable North Scottsdale , with Employee Health Centers supporting HonorHealth's hospital campuses.

The Medical Director will partner with the VP, Chief of Caregiver Wellness and Patient Experience , and an established Employee Health administrative dyad leader, supported by an experienced, highly engaged team of Advanced Practice Providers, nurses, and medical assistants.

Physician Leadership & Administrative Responsibilities | 90–95%

Strategic Leadership & Program Development

• Provide medical direction and strategic planning for systemwide Employee Health and Occupational Medicine services.
• Develop, implement, and refine clinical policies, protocols, workflows, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate directly with hospital executives, corporate leadership, clinical departments, and community stakeholders.
• Provide clinical guidance and mentorship to Advanced Practice Providers and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
• Partner with Infection Prevention, Safety, Human Resources, Risk Management, and operational leaders to advance workplace health and safety.
• Ensure clinical compliance with OSHA, regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements.

Employee Health Oversight

• Provide physician leadership and clinical oversight for Employee Health Centers throughout the HonorHealth network.
• Serve as HonorHealth's Medical Review Officer (MRO) , overseeing occupational drug testing protocols and interpretation.
• Guide clinical practices addressing infectious disease exposures, workplace safety events, employee injuries, and occupational illness.
• Oversee Return-to-Work (RTW) and Fitness-for-Duty (FFD) evaluations and clinical protocols.
• Participate in strategic committees, including Drug Diversion Oversight, Infection Prevention, Workplace Safety, and Employee Health.
• Advance preventive health, medical surveillance, and employee wellness initiatives.

Occupational Medicine Leadership

In collaboration with HonorHealth's Urgent Care and Occupational Medicine Division, the Medical Director will help guide and advance a robust community-based Occupational Medicine platform.

• Provide clinical oversight and establish evidence-based occupational medicine care models.
• Partner with Occupational Health Operations leadership, urgent care clinicians, and specialists.
• Support medical oversight and clinical standards for employer-based Occupational Medicine contracts.
• Guide workplace injury management, medical surveillance, drug testing, Return-to-Work, and Fitness-for-Duty programs.
• Identify opportunities to expand employer partnerships and enhance Occupational Medicine services throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Direct Clinical Responsibilities | 5–10%

Direct clinical care is intentionally limited, allowing the Medical Director to focus primarily on physician leadership and strategic initiatives.

Clinical activities include:

• Occupational and general physical examinations, including DOT and medical surveillance examinations.
• Evaluation and management of work-related injuries and illnesses using evidence-based Occupational Medicine guidelines.
• Infectious disease exposure evaluations and follow-up.
• Return-to-Work and Fitness-for-Duty assessments.
• Medical Review Officer services and clinical consultation.
• Collaboration with internal departments and external employers to ensure continuity of care.

Ideal Candidate

HonorHealth welcomes physicians who combine strong clinical judgment, collaborative leadership, and a passion for workplace health, prevention, and organizational well-being.

Preferred Qualifications

• Board certification in Occupational Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or another relevant specialty.
• Experience in Employee Health, Occupational Medicine, or a hospital/health system environment.
• Knowledge of Workers' Compensation, occupational exposures, workplace safety, and regulatory compliance.
• Medical Review Officer (MRO) certification required.
• Familiarity with OSHA, CDC, and applicable federal and state occupational health guidelines.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across clinical, operational, and executive teams.

Previous Medical Director experience is preferred but not required. Physicians with demonstrated leadership potential, an innovative mindset, and a collaborative approach are encouraged to apply.
