Public Safety Telecommunicator - Entry

If you are interested in taking 911 calls, managing a public safety two‑way radio system, and you are looking to join a dedicated team, the Redmond Police Department has an opportunity for you. Responsibilities Answer emergency and non‑emergency calls, enter information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, and provide accurate and essential information to callers. Dispatch police units via a trunked radio system, anticipate problems, and respond to units as necessary. Continuously update information, enter data into the computer, and inform units of new information or instructions, including follow‑up and status updates. Manage multiple calls simultaneously while prioritizing them for response. Key Skills Filter and process multiple, sometimes competing, sources of information. Accurately capture, retain, and relay verbal information using clear English. Type 35 words per minute while conversing with callers. Discern multiple conversations simultaneously, disseminate appropriate information, prioritize actions, and respond effectively. Articulate information clearly and concisely in both oral and written formats. Condense and organize large amounts of information into readable, logically typed remarks promptly. Availability Be available for shift work covering 24‑hour days, seven‑day weeks, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Quickly perform multiple time‑sensitive tasks with a high degree of accuracy. Be a team player and maintain good working relationships while demonstrating self‑control under stressful circumstances. Automatic Disqualifiers Being convicted of a felony or any offense that would be a felony in Washington State. History of incarceration for any crime. Sale of narcotics or dangerous drugs. Pattern of illegal drug use or abusive prescription medication. Dishonorably discharged from the United States armed forces. Two or more moving traffic violations in the last three years, or a reckless driving, license suspension, or intoxication violation in the last five years. Involvement in more than one motor vehicle accident in the last three years with a criminal citation or guilty plea. Prior law enforcement employment with subsequent violations of federal, state, or city laws. Serious violations of federal, state, city, or county laws. Falsification of application information or dishonesty during any stage of the hiring process. Conviction for domestic violence or unlawful sexual misconduct. Discretionary Disqualifiers Alcohol or substance misuse and/or abuse. Excessive traffic violations. Commission of a felony. Unwillingness to honor fiscal contracts or debts. Conduct that would disrupt public trust in law enforcement. Physical Demands Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Most tasks are done while seated at a workstation for extended periods. Shift rotations cover 24‑hour days, seven‑day weeks, weekends, and holidays. Frequent repetitive use of telephone and radio equipment is expected. Education and Experience High school diploma or G.E.D. Preferred: Two (2) years of experience in a high‑volume or high‑stress environment requiring prioritization and problem solving under pressure. Licenses and Certificates Washington State Patrol ACCESS certification completed within six months of hire. Telecommunicator Level 1 & 2 and CTO certification completed within twelve months of hire.
