Sterile processing has five major areas: Decontamination, processing (inspection, assembly and packaging), Sterilizing, Sterile Storage, and distribution.Minimum QualificationsEducation, Certification, and/or Licensure:High school diploma or equivalent.Certified Registered Central Service Technician through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) through Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or due within 18 months of hire.Core Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. Other duties may be assigned.Provide exceptional patient care by providing prompt, accurate service.Provide supplies of sterile linen packs, basins, instrument trays, and other sterile items.Maintain accurate records of cleaning, disinfection, and the sterilization processes.Strive for consistency in the trays that the department provides.Monitor and enforce controls necessary to prevent cross-contamination according to infection control policies.Establish and maintain sterile processing standards.Implement changes as needed to stay current with new regulations and recommended practices.Review current practices for possible improvements in quality of services provided.Provide services to other departments in all areas of sterile processing.For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements:Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, In-services, and competency validation.Physical RequirementsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
