Grid Technology Research Intern

The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to provide valuable experience to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher. Our goal is to give students meaningful work that builds on what they are learning in the classroom. Our programs are project based. Students will receive a project at the beginning of the summer and present it in our project expo at the end of the summer. Job Summary/Objective: The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to help early career professionals bring together formal learning and productive work to improve their ability to transition from school to work. Southwire provides interns and co-ops with “real world” applications of their academic studies, helpful feedback and coaching, and consideration for employment after graduation. Each student will have a variety of responsibilities and assigned projects that relate to their field of study and be responsible for developing a timeline, progress updates, and final delivery in a senior leadership expo. Key Responsibilities · Your intern assignment is generally 10-12 weeks, and co-op assignment is generally 16-18 weeks and will include an assigned project and opportunities to present your work. · You will also collaborate on other exciting projects and work with talented peers and inspirational leaders, many of whom began as interns and co-ops themselves. · You will be provided a robust developmental experience through an immersive onboarding and offboarding experience, assigned a mentor, networking opportunities, organized events, activities, and community service /volunteer initiatives. · You will have the opportunity to impact the future of the organization, all the while being exposed to a world-class program community. · Finally, our rising senior interns and co-ops are considered for full-time employment opportunities. This position will support the Grid of the Future (GOTF) domain within Southwire R&D’s Spark Innovation team by contributing to research and development initiatives focused on advanced grid technologies. The intern will explore innovative solutions that disrupt Grid Resiliency, Grid Enhancing Technologies, and Grid Electrification focus areas with a curated emphasis on Microgrids, Energy Storage, Renewables, Energy Management, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), Hydrogen, HVDC Systems, and DC Microgrids. The ideal candidate is proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively. They should be eager to learn, demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, and possess excellent communication and analytical skills. The intern will also be responsible for supporting ongoing efforts with research initiatives, project executions, and engaging with key stakeholders as well as technology partners that are internal and external to Southwire. Their work will directly inform Southwire’s strategic direction in wire and cable products and help identify disruptive opportunities in adjacent markets. This position will allow several professional development opportunities with real-world industry exposure. Key Responsibilities Conduct research and analysis on advanced grid technologies, including SMRs, Hydrogen, HVDC Systems, DC Microgrids, and Grid Electrification, with a curated focus on Grid Resiliency and Grid Enhancing Technologies Support the identification and mapping of strategic opportunities for Southwire in both core and adjacent markets Assist in developing go-to-market strategies that align with Southwire’s business goals and growth objectives Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to shape actionable pathways for technology adoption and market disruption Participate in planning and facilitation of roundtable discussions and stakeholder interviews Prepare technical reports, presentations, and other deliverables to communicate project progress and results Engage with internal/external teams to drive project success and support business strategy Assist in updating and creating engineering documentation, standard operating procedures, and process flow diagrams Support internal/external communication efforts related to research projects and initiatives.
