School Bus Cleaner

School Bus Cleaner

Martin County Schools is currently accepting applications for School Bus Cleaners to work over the summer. (Dates of Employment: Approximately June 8-August 10, 2026.) These positions are full-time (40 work hours per week), but temporary. See the job description below for more information.

Preference will be given to candidates who currently hold a School Bus License; but this license is not a requirement for the position.

DEPARTMENT: Transportation

FLSA: Non-exempt

REPORTS TO: Transportation Director

SUPERVISES: None

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time; Temporary

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from High School or equivalency
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old with six (6) months' driving experience
  • Possess and maintain a current North Carolina commercial driver license with proper endorsements, preferred
  • Must pass DOT drug and alcohol testing

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. The employee is required to follow Board of Education policies and procedures and to comply with the instructions and/or directives from his/her supervisor(s).

  1. Drives school bus from school site to School Bus Garage for cleaning; drives school bus back to school site after cleaning.
  2. Cleans bus interior and exterior to comply with the standards of bus cleanliness.
  3. Uses a pressure washer or other provided equipment to clean the bus exterior. Scrubs, washes (with water and cleaning agents), sweeps, or waxes the bus exterior, as necessary.
  4. Washes interior windows and ceilings.
  5. Cleans the floor, seats, aisle, and under the seats, including gum removal.
  6. Cleans the driver's area, including the dash and steering wheel and vacuuming under the pedals.
  7. Removes graffiti and markings from the interior and exterior of the bus.
  8. Is responsible for the care of tools, equipment, and materials used, and cleans and organizes worksite at the end of the workday.
  9. Follows appropriate safety procedures when using tools, equipment, and any required chemicals.
  10. Maintains proficiency in driving skills
  11. Obeys all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the school bus
  12. Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections; complies with standards of bus cleanliness
  13. Accepts responsibility for securing the school bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of the day.
  14. Accepts responsibility for reporting observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus.
  15. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS: The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the School Bus Cleaner job classification within Martin County Schools.

Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to:

  • Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch
  • Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions
  • Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception
  • Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
  • Use a variety of measuring devices
  • Assemble or fabricate parts at or within arm's length
  • Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment and tools determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
  • Observe general surroundings and activities
  • Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels
  • Use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas
  • Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may be require specialized personal protective equipment
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The work is performed in the community and at the School Bus Garage.
