Heritage Golf Group is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Golf Course Superintendent to lead all aspects of golf course maintenance and agronomic operations. This individual will work closely with the General Manager, golf operations team, and Heritage Golf Group’s agronomy leadership to deliver an outstanding golf experience while responsibly managing the course’s financial, physical, and human resources. Position Summary The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the overall maintenance, conditioning, presentation, and improvement of the golf course, practice facilities, clubhouse grounds, landscaping, open spaces, and related equipment. This position provides leadership for the golf course maintenance team and oversees agronomic programs, departmental budgeting, staffing, irrigation, equipment maintenance, regulatory compliance, safety, capital planning, and course improvement projects. Key Responsibilities Maintain the golf course and practice facilities to consistently deliver excellent playing conditions and visual presentation. Develop and implement comprehensive agronomic programs for turfgrass, trees, shrubs, landscaping, irrigation, drainage, fertility, and pest management. Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, develop, and evaluate golf course maintenance team members. Build a positive, accountable department culture centered on teamwork, safety, professional development, and pride in the property. Prepare and manage the annual golf course maintenance budget, monitor performance, and take appropriate action to meet financial goals. Develop short- and long-term maintenance plans that support the Club’s operational and strategic objectives. Inspect the golf course regularly, identify opportunities for improvement, and establish clear priorities for the maintenance team. Plan and oversee golf course construction, renovation, maintenance, and improvement projects. Manage irrigation and drainage systems, including preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and water-use practices. Oversee the equipment repair operation and ensure that golf course maintenance equipment is properly maintained and safely operated. Develop recommendations for capital improvements, equipment purchases, and infrastructure needs. Ensure fertilizers, pesticides, petroleum products, and other controlled materials are properly selected, applied, stored, documented, and disposed of in compliance with applicable regulations. Maintain all required application, maintenance, personnel, safety, and regulatory records. Implement and enforce a comprehensive safety program, including equipment training, chemical‑handling procedures, hazard communication, and access to current Safety Data Sheets. Coordinate work performed by outside contractors and monitor quality, timelines, and budget compliance. Maintain the landscaping and grounds surrounding the clubhouse and other areas of the property. Communicate regularly with the General Manager and golf operations team regarding course conditions, maintenance activities, weather impacts, scheduled events, and anticipated rounds. Provide timely and professional communication to members and guests regarding current and upcoming maintenance activities when appropriate. Participate in staff meetings and collaborate effectively with Club leadership and applicable committees. Evaluate weather and course conditions and make recommendations regarding restrictions or closure when continued play could damage the golf course or compromise safety. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, horticulture, plant science, or a related field; or an associate degree from an accredited turfgrass management program. Previous experience as an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent or Golf Course Superintendent. Demonstrated supervisory and team‑leadership experience in a golf course or club environment. Strong knowledge of turfgrass management, irrigation, drainage, fertility, pest management, equipment maintenance, and golf course construction practices. Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations applicable to golf course maintenance operations. Strong budgeting, planning, organization, problem‑solving, and decision‑making abilities. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Understanding of the game of golf and how maintenance practices affect course playability and the golfer experience. Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and changing weather or course conditions. Licenses and Certifications GCSAA Class A membership or the ability to attain Class A status is preferred. Current pesticide applicator license or the ability to obtain the appropriate South Carolina certification within a defined period of employment. Valid driver’s license. Physical and Work Requirements This position requires regular work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around moving equipment, fertilizers, pesticides, petroleum products, and other materials commonly used in golf course maintenance.
