What we offer: Pay range: $28.96 - $39.18/hour (additional pay for experienced officers). Hiring Bonus ($2,500 for commissioned officers and $1,500 for prior military) Education Pay: All certified officers are eligible to receive education pay of $2,000 ($500 each year for 4 years) for a Bachelor degree and a total of $3,500 ($500 for 7 years) for a Master degree or higher. Paid relocation expenses (successful candidate needs to discuss with HR) Great health and dental benefits Competitive vacation, holiday and sick leave (80 hours of paid vacation in year one) Tuition reimbursement (up to $2,000/year) Shift differential pay ($1.00 per hour for 2nd and 3rd shifts) Details related to the position description are below: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 60% Protection of Life and Property Enforce state laws and city ordinances. Patrol the community routinely and conduct traffic enforcement to ensure a safe and secure community. Engage in citizen contact situations such as business checks, assisting stranded motorists, suspicious person contacts, crime prevention sharing with civic organizations or homeowners, and any action in furtherance of the community policing philosophy of the department. Provide basic response to crime scenes including identification, preservation, and collection of evidence. Provide advanced processing of non-critical crime scene as assigned by the on-duty Watch Commander. (Police Officer 2 & 3) Conduct thorough criminal and traffic investigations. Apprehend violators in a reasonable and lawful manner following established laws, policies and regulations. Transport detainees to appropriate facilities. Assist citizens with situations that involve crime, traffic concerns, quality of life issues or any situation that requires a police response. Answer citizen complaints, investigate suspicious conditions, and take necessary action, including preparing necessary police reports. Alert citizens of hazardous and dangerous conditions. Direct traffic when needed. Operate motor vehicle on a regular basis. Carry and maintain qualification for authorized firearms and other weapons pursuant to department standard operating procedures. 30% Administrative Duties Conduct crime prevention surveys and other activities. Complete all necessary official forms and reports. Prepare cases for successful prosecution and provide credible courtroom testimony. Maintain cleanliness, organization, and readiness of assigned work area and equipment (booking desk, gun cleaning station, report writing, locker room, etc.). (Police Officer 2) Ensure active participation in and reporting on an assigned open beat project by officers assigned to his or her shift. (Police Officer 2) Ensure successful planning and execution of shift-related special enforcement activities (i.e. traffic) at the discretion of the on-duty Watch Commander. (Police Officer 2 & 3) Conduct and present analysis of crime trends and statistics to assigned beat team. (Police Officer 2 & 3) Attend training and seminars to maintain proficiency and certifications. Actively participate in training and drill sessions, tests, and evaluations. Act as a liaison with homeowners’ associations and neighborhood watch programs, attending meetings and events as requested. (Police Officer 2) Plan and present law enforcement/public safety-related training classes in areas of expertise. (Police Officer 2 & 3) Continually looks for new and improved ways of completing the above functions. Other tasks as assigned will be performed in order to address business needs. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Latitude: Most duties are assigned and then the employee arranges tasks in order to complete duties. Problem‑solving and decision‑making involving the protection of life and property is accomplished independently most of the time.Regular and reliable attendance at work is required. Interaction: Frequent interaction with employees throughout the organization, prosecutors, and the general public. Occasional interaction with outside agencies including municipal, county, state, and federal agencies. Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Some college, preferred. Must have satisfied all requirements as set forth in K.S.A. 74‑5605 “Qualifications of Applicant (Police Officer) for Training Course Requirements.” Must complete 40 hours of continuing education training annually, as required. One year of law enforcement experience, preferred. Valid Kansas driver’s license and driving record must meet commercial liability insurance requirements. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of law enforcement techniques and procedures. Knowledge of all federal, state, and local ordinances governing police activities. Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify issues and ability to make decisions in a timely manner. Ability to apply intermediate level mathematics skills. Ability to operate firearms, patrol vehicles, mobile/portable/base radios, crime scene processing equipment, and all other police related equipment. Ability to operate office-related equipment, including ability to access, input, and retrieve information from various computer software programs. Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the general public and to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing. Must be able to provide reliable courtroom testimony. Criminal convictions for acts of dishonesty, or sustained disciplinary findings of misconduct related to truthfulness, racial bias, or other acts that would lead to potential impeachment of courtroom testimony as detailed in Brady v. Maryland or Giglio v. U.S. will be cause for disqualification for applicants and termination for employees. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions: Must have the ability to pass and maintain all physical requirements and activities of the law enforcement training center. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and lifting of 50 pounds required. Must maintain ability to apprehend and take persons into custody. Exposure to adverse weather conditions, dangerous, and hazardous situations is required. Must be able to work all shifts and any day of the week. Notice of Disqualification It is the practice of the Derby Police Department to disqualify all applicants from consideration for certified officer positions, who have done any of the following: Ever convicted of a felony. (Includes violations of any state law or UCMJ) Ever convicted of the following: Domestic violence crimes Theft Criminal deprivation of property Any crime of dishonesty As an adult, been convicted of two or more crimes of violence or use of physical force or threat thereof Ever been discharged (terminated) from employment for theft, lying, any dishonest act, bias behavior or any acts that are considered Brady/Giglio violations. While serving as a law enforcement officer, having a sustained complaint or leaving employment during or prior to an investigation for any of the following: Improper use of force Misconduct Violations that are considered Brady/Giglio violations At any age, ever participated in distributing marijuana, illegal non-prescriptive steroids or any felony level drugs or controlled substances with hallucinogenic properties, i.e. cocaine, heroin, LSD, ecstasy, fentanyl, hashish, mushrooms, opiates, methamphetamine, etc. **Exception listed in Case by Case Disqualifiers** As an adult, ever used, bought or possessed any felony level drugs, or any felony level drugs or controlled substances with hallucinogenic properties, i.e. heroin, LSD, and methamphetamine, etc. **Exception listed in Case by Case Disqualifiers** Substantial evidence of intentional deception, subterfuge, misrepresentation, falsification or omission of fact demonstrated during the pre-employment process Temporary Disqualifiers: Within the past ten years: As an adult, experimentality used, bought or possessed any felony level drugs, or any felony level drugs or controlled substances with hallucinogenic properties, i.e. cocaine, ecstasy, fentanyl, hashish, mushrooms and opiates. **Exception listed in Case by Case Disqualifiers** Within the past five years: Been convicted of: Possession of marijuana Criminal damage to property (vandalism) Driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs Driving with suspended driver’s license from DUI conviction/diversion/chemical test failure Vehicular manslaughter or homicide Use of a vehicle in committing of a felony Leaving the scene of a traffic accident (hit & run) Fleeing and eluding a police officer Have an instance of a chemical test refusal Been discharged (terminated) from employment for cause (misconduct) Within the past three years: Used or possessed marijuana or illegal non-prescriptive steroids Committed or participated in the crimes of theft, criminal deprivation of property or other crimes of dishonesty Two or more at-fault traffic crashes Been convicted of: One crime of violence or use of physical force or threat thereof A total of four or more of the following violations: Speeding 15 mph or less over the posted limit Driving too fast for conditions Unsafe lane change Failure to stop Failure to yield right of way Improper turn Following too closely Illegal passing Seatbelt or child restraint violations Texting or phone use violation Operating without insurance Driving a commercial motor vehicle without a commercial driver’s license, or without the proper class or endorsement Equipment load, size, weight, and similar safety related violations One or more speeding violations greater than 15 mph over the speed limit Transporting an open container of alcohol Reckless driving, careless driving, and/or racing on roadways Passing a stopped school bus Violating an out of service order Operating with a suspended or revoked license Railroad crossing violation Violating traffic law in connection with a fatal collision Within the last one year: Failure to respond, complete or show up to any portion of the pre-employment testing after having placed your name on the list to either test or attend an oral board, without contacting the Coordinator. Case by Case Disqualifiers: (Circle all that apply) If an applicant has been involved in one or more of the following, his/her application will be reviewed and may result in disqualification based upon any of the following criteria: Convictions of: Battery of a law enforcement officer Battery Weapons violations Failure to appear Obstruct official duty of police or judicial officer or interference of a law enforcement officer Transporting an open container of alcohol Records of arrest or listed as suspect on criminal cases without subsequent conviction Drug abuse up to 22 years of age but not less than three years from the date of application Non-recreational prescription drug use, i.e. taking or providing a prescription medication belonging to another person for therapeutic reasons (not to alter mood or “get high”) Being placed on the disqualification list by the Chief of Police for information found in your background Disqualification Appeal: If placed on the disqualification list, you may appeal your disqualification to the Chief of Police in writing for consideration in the next testing cycle. Minimum Qualifications: In addition to the preceding conduct, you must meet the following criteria: Have graduated from a high school accredited by the Kansas State Board of Education or the appropriate accrediting agency of another state jurisdiction or have obtained the equivalent of a high school education as defined by rules and regulations of the commission; Be of good moral character sufficient to warrant the public trust in the applicant as a police officer or law enforcement officer and be free of any convictions or sustained complaints that would qualify as Giglio violations; Be free of any physical or mental condition which adversely affects the ability to perform the essential functions of a police officer or law enforcement officer with reasonable skill, safety and judgment; Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment; and Possess or obtain a valid Kansas driver’s license prior to the time of employment.
