Job Summary Reporting to the Associate Director, Research & Teaching Animal Care Program who is the Director of Campus Veterinary Services (CVS), provide medical care to research and teaching animals which includes rotating weekend on-calls and performing routine rounds of assigned animal care areas. Provide clinical and preventative health services to a wide variety of species: evaluate project-related clinical cases; perform research project support procedures; and review IACUC protocols. Provide oversight to the Laboratory Animal Health Clinic and indirectly supervise Animal Health Technicians and part time student technicians. Act on behalf of the Attending Veterinarian (AV) with regards to veterinary oversight of the university animal care program and regulatory compliance. May at times act as the AV when designated in the absence of the AV. Act on behalf of the Attending Veterinarian (AV) with regards to veterinary oversight of the university animal care program and regulatory compliance. May at times act as the AV when designated in the absence of the AV. Perform advanced medical or surgical procedures that are novel to a species or field. Participate as a voting member on various committees related to the care and welfare of the research and teaching animals on UC Davis campus and possibly chair various committees related to this topic. At Research Facilities: Ensure activities adhere to animal use protocols; provide assessment and recommendations to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee to ensure compliance. Independently review and advise on complex clinical cases with innovative research models on a daily basis with little or no precedent for reference. Responsible for consulting on complex experimental models, animal welfare, and biosecurity within the Animal Care Program or as it relates to UC Davis animal care and welfare. Act as main Safety Officer for the department and manage all the standard operating procedures, safety training and records for CVS. Participate as a voting member on the Institutional Biosafety Committee as the campus veterinarian representative. Act as the biosafety officer through assessment of various animal disease levels to allow for import and export of animals around the UC Davis campus as well as collaborating institutions. This will require management and implementation of various testing and diagnostics of entire colonies of animals in vivariums around campus or collaborating institutions. Act as backup manager to all clinical and surgical cases through collaboration and delegation of tasks to full time and part time technical staff. Apply By Date August 18, 2026 at 11:59pm Qualifications Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM) from a recognized and accredited school of veterinary medicine; Licensed DVM in a state, with the attainment of CA license within 1 year of employment. Recent experience managing a Laboratory Animal Health Clinic and supervising Animal Health Technicians. Demonstrated competency in a leadership role. Recent experience performing clinical care in a veterinary clinic, experience in a laboratory animal clinic preferred. USDA accreditation or attainment within 1 year of hire. Recent experience in clinical medicine as it applies to the diagnosis, surgical procedures, and medical treatment of a wide variety of laboratory animals, nonhuman primates, agricultural species, aquatic species, amphibians, reptiles, and other exotic species. Experience in preventive medicine programs required for laboratory animals, nonhuman primates, agricultural species, aquatic species, amphibians, reptiles and other exotic species including vaccination, parasitology, bacteriology, and virology screening programs. Knowledge of institutional, local, state, national and international rules and regulations governing the use and care of laboratory animals (Animal Welfare Act, ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Endangered Species Act, FDA Good Laboratory Practice Regulations, and California Public Health Law). Knowledge of humane care and housing of animals with understanding of standards and guidelines as established by AAALAC International. Preferred Qualifications Board certified or eligible for American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) certification boards. Experience working with large and small laboratory animals including nonhuman primates and exotic species. Experience teaching in a classroom situation, seminar format, and on a one-to-one basis. Experience in conducting presentations at national and international specialty meetings. Knowledge of gross necropsy procedures and basic histopathology of laboratory animals. Oral and written communication skills to develop procedures/instructions/training documents and to interact with a wide variety of individuals. Decision-making and problem-solving skills for research and technical problems.
