Summary Ultrasound Technologist OB reports to the OB/GYN Physician Director and the Director of Imaging Operations. Under general supervision, performs diagnostic procedures to assist the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury, using ultrasound equipment to produce images that show size and depth of the tissue being studied. Responsibilities Operate ultrasound equipment efficiently. Maintain aseptic conditions during invasive procedures. Review available clinical data from charts, LifeLinks, and other EMR systems to alert nurses and/or physicians, physician extenders or licensed practitioners to possible contradictions for exam or procedure. Review and record pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results. Observe and reassure patient prior to and during all exams or procedures. Perform ultrasound scanning for exams or procedures specific to the patient population and the OB/GYN physicians. Position and instruct patient regarding the procedure to obtain desired diagnostic results specified by the physician, physician extender or licensed practitioner. Perform ultrasound exam or procedure, using equipment and record anatomical and pathophysiological data on film. Add technical notes, as needed, in PACS or other recording medium used by OB/GYN. Assemble all necessary information and imaging, including own impressions of the case, and present them to the physician or licensed practitioner for interpretation. In procedures: Assist physician, physician extender or licensed practitioner by confirming the location of interest using ultrasound equipment. In procedures: Scan the patient using ultrasound equipment at designated intervals during the procedure and acquire images. Hand instruments and equipment to the physician, physician extender or licensed practitioner. Review daily procedure and scheduled examinations. Store supplies required for ultrasound procedures. Check expiration dates for all ultrasound supplies and medications. Dispose of expired materials using appropriate procedure. Ensure that ultrasound and other equipment in the department functions properly to maintain accuracy of test procedures. Contact appropriate service personnel within and/or outside the hospital to make necessary repairs or adjustments, notifying manager or lead ultrasound technologist. Perform all duties with consideration of optimum department efficiency. Maintain and enhance own professional expertise through participation in in‑service education, professional seminars, and meetings. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications ARDMS certification or eligibility required. Must acquire ARDMS certification within 24 months of graduation from an accredited program to maintain ACR accreditation. Must have OB certification or be eligible. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of care. If working for MFM, must have Level II OB experience with NT certificate. Experience One year of progressive OB ultrasound experience preferred. Analytical skills to determine best method of obtaining the desired diagnostic results. Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress, as well as with staff members and physicians. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals, physicians’ offices, and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions, including use of safety equipment and protective clothing. Walks and stands intermittently throughout the day. Subject to electrical and energy hazards. Physical dexterity and strength to operate ultrasound equipment and lift and move patients into correct position. May lift and position patients, and lift supplies up to 50 pounds. Pay Range $39.56 - $65.28 per hour.
