Controls Engineer (PLC/HMI) - Water Treatment Systems

We are seeking a Process Controls Engineer to join our Engineering team in Westminster, Colorado. In this role, you will design, program, test, commission, and support automated water treatment and environmental remediation systems used by municipalities and industrial customers throughout the United States.
This is a hands-on engineering position offering the opportunity to work on meaningful infrastructure projects while gaining exposure to every phase of controls engineering—from design and programming to startup and customer support.
What You’ll DoAs a Process Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and implementing control systems that help deliver safe, reliable water treatment solutions.
Key Responsibilities· Design and implement control systems for municipal drinking water treatment facilities.
· Develop and maintain Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) using AutoCAD.
· Create electrical interconnection drawings, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, and control system documentation.
· Design and support electrical control panels for water treatment equipment.
· Develop, modify, test, and troubleshoot PLC programs.
· Configure and maintain HMI applications and operator interfaces.
· Perform control system testing, simulation, and validation activities.
· Support project planning, proposal development, and controls scope definition.
· Lead startup and commissioning activities for new installations.
· Perform wiring verification, loop checks, and field troubleshooting.
· Serve as the primary controls engineering contact for assigned projects after startup.
· Support customers through controls troubleshooting, optimization, program updates, and HMI modifications.
· Collaborate with Engineering, Project Management, and Field Services teams to ensure successful project execution.
· Assist with the development and continuous improvement of company controls standards.
· Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, technicians, and interns as needed.
· Document startup activities, field observations, and service-related controls work.
Travel RequirementsThis position includes travel to customer sites throughout the United States.
· Up to 40% travel during the training and onboarding period
· Approximately 20–30% travel thereafter
Travel may include startup support, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer training activities.
Required Qualifications· Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience).
· 2–4 years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, electrical design, or process controls.
· Experience creating AutoCAD drawings, including P&IDs and electrical interconnection drawings.
· Experience developing, modifying, and troubleshooting PLC and HMI applications in industrial environments.
· Experience with Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, RSLogix Micro, and Unity Pro.
· Experience with HMI platforms such as FactoryTalk View Studio, InduSoft, Vijeo Designer, and C-More.
· Experience with Modbus, EtherNet/IP, and industrial communication networks.
· Ability to troubleshoot electrical and controls-related systems independently.
· Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and control panel drawings.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
· Strong communication and customer-facing skills.
· Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
· Ability to pass a physical examination, background check, and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications· Experience developing P&IDs and electrical control drawings.
· Experience commissioning industrial control systems.
· Experience with municipal drinking water treatment, groundwater treatment, or environmental remediation systems.
· Experience in water treatment, wastewater treatment, or related process industries.
· Familiarity with instrumentation including flow meters, pressure transmitters, level instruments, analyzers, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
· Knowledge of UL508A control panel design and industrial electrical systems.
