POSITION SUMMARY Serves as a Pediatrician (Physician) and provides comprehensive medical care services for the full range of pediatric patients from premature infants to adolescents up through age 18 years. The health care provided primarily involves patients who have common pediatric illnesses in which the course of treatment is fairly well known. However, the practitioner may be called on to diagnose and treat illnesses that are less common and require skills only acquired as a specialist in pediatric care. Newborns and pediatric patients may have diseases that require critical care diagnosis and stabilization before transfer to a tertiary facility. QUALIFICATIONS NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS Education: A Medical Degree, MD or DO Completion of a three (3) year residency program in Pediatrics. Board Eligible or Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. If more than five (5) years out of residency must be board certified in Pediatrics. Experience: Should have experience in the past three (3) years of providing care for Level II newborns and hospitalized pediatric patients or critically ill patients. License/Certification: Must possess and maintain a current and unrestricted license to practice as a physician in any state within the United States, District of Columbia or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Must have and maintain a current valid certification of the following throughout employment: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification from the American Heart Association Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification Credentialing: Additional credentialing/privileging qualifications required for membership to the Medical Staff. Other Skills and Abilities: A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas: Positive working relationships with others Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences Excellent clinical skills and judgment Completion of and above-satisfactory scores on all job interviews, demonstrating to the satisfaction of the interviewees and TCRHCC that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job Successful completion of and positive results from all background and reference checks, including positive employment references from authorized representatives of past and current employers demonstrating to the satisfaction of TCRHCC a record of satisfactory performance and that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job Successful completion of fingerprint clearance requirements, physical examinations, and other screenings indicating that the applicant is qualified to be employed by TCRHCC and demonstrating to the satisfaction of TCRHCC that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job Submission of all required employment‑related documents, applications, resumes, references, and other required information free of false, misleading, or incomplete information, as determined by TCRHCC. MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT The physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical: Must have ability of prolonged walking and maintaining balance, ability to frequently stand, bend, kneel, crouch, maintain balance, reach, and occasionally sit, drive, and climb. Frequent ability to lift, push, and pull up to 34 lbs is required, must also be able to occasionally lift, push, and pull over 100 lbs as needed. Sensory requirements for position include prolonged ability of far, near, color vision, depth perception, seeing fine details, hearing normal speech, hearing overhead pages, and telephone use. Must have both hand manipulation of continuous simple and firm grasping, fine manipulation and frequent use of keyboards. Mental: Must be able to perform evenings, nights, and weekends on a regular basis and handle the stresses of rural medicine with critically ill patients; must have high degree of judgment and leadership in coordinating emergency services. Must have ability to cope with high level of stress, make decisions under high pressure, concentrate, handle a high degree of flexibility handle multiple priorities in stressful situation, work alone, demonstrate high degree of patience, adapt to shift work, work in areas that are close and crowded, and frequently cope with anger/fear/hostility of others in a calm way, as well as occasionally managing altercations. Must accept a flexible schedule to meet unit needs. Environmental: May be exposed to infectious diseases for a prolonged amount of time, frequent exposure to loud noises, and occasional exposure to chemical agents, and hazardous or moving equipment. RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The practitioner will assume responsibility for the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care of a full range of pediatric patients. Typical, but not all-inclusive assignments include the following: Conducts outpatient well childcare clinics. Provides age appropriate history taking and physical examination. Provides age appropriate preventive care. Appropriately instructs and counsels patients and family members as required. Provides outpatient pediatric care for acute illnesses and patients who require care for chronic medical conditions. Appropriately instructs and counsels patients and family members as required. Provides consultation to the emergency department for care of pediatric patients as requested. This will include diagnosis and treatment of critically ill patients. Interviews and examines hospitalized patients, reviews past medical history, and requests and/or performs diagnostic tests and examinations deemed necessary to obtain all possible information related to each case. Makes preliminary diagnosis, directs, prescribes or provides treatment, or arranges for specialized care or patient referral as required. Bases decisions upon information obtained, professional medical knowledge and skills and policies and procedures. Makes notes of observations to be incorporated into clinical records. Provides emergency care as required. Provides definitive management in all medical categories for cases that do not require referral. Gives care including prevention, health maintenance, early diagnosis, and treatment and follow-up services to patients under his/her care. Provides care to premature infants who require Level II nursery care. Provides stabilization for transport of critically ill newborns that require Level III nursery care. Prepares appropriate medical records for all patients seen to assure the accumulation and organization of all pertinent clinical data needed to provide comprehensive medical care. Dictates clinical reports and correspondence concerning patients under his/her care to physicians, hospitals and other individuals and facilities. Refers patients to appropriate contracted medical or other government facilities, providing full clinical information for care and diagnostic procedures that cannot be adequately provided here. Coordinates and integrates information obtained into the ongoing Health Care Program at TCRHCC and assures the provision of timely follow-up care as required. Works closely with allied health professionals (i.e., Community Health Nurse, Social Workers, Health Educator, etc.) to utilize and coordinate the services of other health care professionals in the management of the patient’s medical, psychological and social problems. Handwriting must be legible and must be willing to use an Electronic Health Record. Ensure proper PPE is always worn while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH‑approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates) Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee and external customer satisfaction.
