Certified Surgical Technologist

Job Summary The Surgical Technologist assists in the preparation and care of surgical patients under the general direction of a professional nurse or a physician. The role requires expertise in sterile/aseptic technique, knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and related instrumentation to support the surgeon’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Schedule and Shift Details Hours of operation are 0600-2100 Monday through Friday. Typical shifts include 0600-1430 (days) and 1230-2100 (PMs). One PM shift is scheduled each week, and one PM Friday shift is scheduled every 4th week. Call coverage is required during off hours and weekends: 1-2 weekday calls per month and every 4–8th weekend (Fri–Mon morning), holiday calls twice per year. Call response time is 30 minutes. Key Accountabilities Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation to achieve the highest quality outcomes. Select instruments, equipment, and supplies for each surgical procedure to meet clinical objectives. Prepare the operating room by setting up sterile tables and verifying equipment and supplies. Scrub for surgical procedures by assisting with patient preparation, draping, passing sterile instruments, and supporting surgical steps to ensure quality outcomes. Follow sterile technique principles and address any breaches to maintain a safe environment. Identify specimens before passing off the field and transport them to pathology as directed, ensuring compliance with policy. Assist in medication identification and labeling with the registered nurse, ensuring safe medication practices. Help transfer patients into or out of the operating room to support efficiency and safety. Cleans rooms, instruments, and equipment according to regulatory standards and policies. Qualifications High School diploma or GED preferred. Minimum age 18 years. Completion of a surgical technologist training program. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required for the Cath Lab. Compliance with department-specific competencies. Physical Demands Ability to stand, stoop, walk, bend, push, and pull freely, and lift up to 50 pounds without assistance. The position involves exposure to blood-borne pathogens while performing job duties. Work Environment Potential exposure to communicable diseases, sharp objects and instruments, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and electric shock. Noise levels may occasionally be high, and there is occasional exposure to hazardous materials. Interaction occurs with department members and various patients.
