RN for EMS Transfers: Casual (PRN)

POSITION/JOB SUMMARY:
The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered care on interfacility transfers. The RN assumes full clinical responsibility for patient assessment, ALS-level interventions, monitoring, and medication administration throughout transport. The RN works in collaboration with EMTs, who provide vehicle operations and BLS support, while the RN serves as the lead medical authority on board.
The RN for EMS Transfers is not regularly scheduled and is called in as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Patient Care:
- Administer and manage medications permitted under RN scope, including titrated drips, controlled substances, cardiac medications, and specialty therapies .
- Maintain continuous monitoring of cardiac rhythms, vitals, oxygenation, infusion pumps, and other advanced equipment.
- Provide airway management, including advanced techniques permitted within RN scope and agency protocols.
- Perform interventions such as IV/IO access, ventilator oversight, advanced airway adjuncts, and specialized monitoring based on patient needs.
- Reassess patient condition frequently and intervene appropriately if deterioration occurs.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Communicate with sending/receiving providers and medical control to ensure safe; seamless continuity of care.
- Supervise and coordinate with EMTs, providing direction on lifting, moving, and BLS support tasks.
- Administrative and Clinical Support:
- Ensure that all patient charts, records, and documentation are accurate and complete.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality following Johnson Memorial policies and HIPAA regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Quality Improvement & Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all ambulance policies, nursing standards, and state/federal regulations.
- Engage in ongoing education, training, and professional development to stay current on medical and nursing best practices.

- Compliance with current law and policy to provide a work environment free from any sort of harassment and all illegal and discriminatory behavior.
- Supports and participates in common teamwork:
- Cooperates and works together with all co-workers; plan and complete job duties with minimal supervisory direction including appropriate judgment.
- Uses tactful, appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional situations.
- Follow up as appropriate with supervisor, co-workers, patients, or residents regarding reported complaints, problems, and/or concerns.
- Promotes positive public relations with patients, residents, family members and guests.
- Completes requirements for in-service and annual training, acceptable attendance, uniform dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing).
- Licensure
- Current, unrestricted RN license in the state of Minnesota.
- Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
- Cardiac Advanced Life Support (CALS) or Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) preferred.
- Experience
- Previous nursing experience in critical care, emergency, or acute care setting is preferred.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of clinical experience, preferably in ED, ICU, or other acute settings.
- Skills
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to operate independently in a mobile, resource-limited environment.
- Emergency medication administration.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in dynamic environments.
- Knowledge of electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
