Job Summary The MRI Technologist I performs procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards. Operates MRI scanners and associated equipment with a high level of proficiency, including scanners, post‑processing stations, IV contrast injectors, oxygen and suction equipment, patient transport and patient monitoring equipment. Essential Functions Examines requests and verifies orders for each assigned patient. Refers and questions orders to the radiologist before performing exam and contacts ordering provider when there are discrepancies. Properly identifies patients using two patient identifiers and assists patients while offering a brief explanation of the procedures. Prepares patients for the procedure with a full explanation and documents on appropriate worksheets. Interviews patients for a complete medical history. Reviews in‑patients, ER, and outpatients EMR’s to obtain pertinent clinical history. Records medical history on requisitions and correlates other test results and laboratory data with exam being performed. Assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to completion. Prepares and administers IV contrast according to departmental protocols. Records contrast type and amount when requested. Evaluates technical quality of images and consults with a radiologist if needed. Recognizes abnormal anatomy and processes additional, reconstructed images or measurements as instructed. Performs basic patient care functions. Informs nursing personnel of any changes in the patient’s condition and initiates life support measures when necessary. Assists in code‑blue procedures during medical emergencies. Performs MRI scanning and assists physicians/PA during invasive procedures. Practices proper sterile technique in preparation of supplies. Performs all invasive procedures in accordance with bloodborne pathogens, isolation, and infection control policies. Is authorized to obtain medication or contrast material as directed by a licensed practitioner. Practices principle of radiation safety for self, employees, patients and family members. Follows radiation safety standards. Reports malfunctioning equipment to the department director/manager/supervisor and clinical engineering or radiology engineer. Maintains knowledge and skills required to work safely in an environment that can create significant exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease. Adheres to hospital fire and safety procedures. Attends all in‑service classes and completes all required safety modules. Operates radiology computer system including entering orders and charging procedures/supplies. Documents contrast administration in the MAR. Maintains assigned work area neat and orderly, keeps area stocked and cleans all work areas to promote cleanliness. Assists other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, when performing exams or services in conjunction with an MRI scan. Maintains knowledge of all MRI safety requirements for staff and patients while in and around magnetic fields. Minimum Job Requirements Graduate of an institution accredited by an agency that ARRT recognizes in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology. Active enrollment in an MRI ARRT registry (eligible or ARMRIT program required). MRI registry must be obtained within one year of hire. CPR certification required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development. Demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to the ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Requires moderate to heavy physical effort in lifting and moving patients, equipment, and supplies. Occasional standing, walking, and sitting during normal operation. May be required to stretch, bend, twist, squat, or kneel. May be exposed to various physical conditions throughout the day such as walking on hard surfaces, climbing stairs, and being near moving equipment. Requires use of radiation safety guidelines to prevent exposure to ionizing radiation.
