Description:
Unit specializes in adult psychiatric care.
The unit has a capacity of 26 beds.
Nurse-to-patient ratios during the day are 1 nurse for every 6-7 patients.
During the night, the ratio is 1 nurse for every 8 patients.
Patient Care Technicians on duty: 5 during the day, 5 during the evening, and 3 at night.
Common diagnoses include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, substance abuse, and depression.
The unit does not admit detox or rehabilitation patients; all admissions are from emergency services.
Previous psychiatric experience is required.
IV administration is not performed on this unit; however, PCTs may be tasked with IM injections and phlebotomy.
Charge Nurses are present 24/7 to oversee operations.
PCT duties include safety checks, conducting room checks, checking vital signs, assisting patients with daily living activities, and observing patient care.
PCTs are also responsible for rounding every 15 minutes and conducting blood glucose checks.
Support staff is available to assist as needed.
Utilization of physical restraints is avoided through the use of de-escalation techniques.
No respiratory therapy staff is available on the unit; however, RNs are trained to manage CPAP and BiPAP equipment.
This unit does not have telemetry monitoring.
Patient Care Technicians work closely with nursing staff as required.
Weekend work is required every other weekend.
Holiday coverage may be required as part of the rotation.
Travelers may need to float to other psychiatric units when necessary.
Uniform color for PCTs is maroon red.
Unit-specific orientation lasts between 2-4 days with a preceptor.
Excessive call-ins could lead to termination.
No on-call or standby requirements are associated with this role.
All staff must complete required certifications prior to employment.
