Under the direction of the assigned administrator, Firefighter Paramedic protects public safety, health, and welfare by responding to fire and emergency medical calls for service and maintaining equipment and facilities. Provides basic and advanced life support services during aid calls, conducts fire suppression activities, supports traffic accident responses and other hazards, and engages in public relations.
The following list of functions, duties, and tasks is typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform other closely related or department-specific functions, duties, and tasks from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Responds to fire calls for service, lays hose lines, directs the water stream, and sets up ladders.
- Performs rescue, clean-up, and salvage work; ventilates buildings.
- Responds to emergency medical calls for service, follows state and local protocols in the treatment of sick and injured persons, administers first aid, CPR, and other emergency medical procedures.
- Maintains an inventory of emergency medical supplies and equipment.
- Maintains fire facilities, equipment, and apparatus ensuring pristine condition.
- May be recalled to duty in cases of emergency.
- Conducts preventive maintenance and inspections on fire apparatus and equipment
- Assists and cooperates with other public safety agencies.
- Conducts medical assessments, fire inspections, fire suppression, public education, and training classes.
- Manages emergency scenes at the highest level of medical care in the field and statewide.
- Manages multi-casualty incidents and fire scene suppression tasks. Participates in the daily fire station activities including maintenance of the station, grounds, equipment, and various training activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED. Previous firefighting experience is highly desirable. Must be at least 18 years of age.
LICENSE(S) REQUIRED:
- Valid state-issued driver's license with firefighter endorsement and a good driving record
CERTIFICATIONS AND TESTING REQUIRED:
- EMT-P certification in San Bernardino County at time of application or must be able to obtain the San Bernardino County certification
- CPR certification
- California State Fire Marshal FFI Certificate or California State Fire Marshal accredited Level I FFI academy
- California state paramedic license and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

- This position works primarily in an outdoor environment.
- Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Very Heavy Work: exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of workday), and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of workday), and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly (2/3 or more of workday) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Heavy Work.
The City of Barstow provides a generous benefit package as described in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City and Bargaining Unit 5 (Barstow Professional Firefighters' Association):
- UNIFORM ALLOWANCE:
- First payroll period with a pay date in July: $450
- First payroll period with a pay date in December: $450
- BILINGUAL SERVICES PAY:
- Members hired prior to July 1, 2011, are eligible to receive a five percent (5%) increase over their base wage rate as bilingual services pay.
- Members hired after July 1, 2011, will be eligible to receive a $120 per month (approximately $55.38 per pay period) as bilingual services pay.
- TUITION REIMBURSEMENT:
- Member will be eligible for tuition reimbursement of up to $1,000 per fiscal year.
- EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE:
- Associate of Arts/Science Degree: $1,000 per year
- Bachelor of Arts/Science Degree: $1,500 per year
- SKILL PAY:
- Paramedic Certification: $1,000 per month
- EMT Certification: $275 per month
- HMT Certification: $125 per month
- USAR Certification: $100 per month
- Firefighter II Certification: three percent (3%) above base rate of pay
- Equipment Operator/Driver (1A/1B) Certification – four percent (4%) above base rate of pay
- Company Officer Certification – five percent (5%) above base rate of pay
- HOLIDAYS:
- Will receive fifteen (15) days of holiday leave time each year
- Winter Holiday Hours: December 26 through December 31 each year. In conjunction with the City paid holiday time (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve Day, New Year's Day)
- CAFETERIA PLAN:
- Members who elect to receive medical coverage through the City will receive a monthly allowance based on the enrolled medical benefit coverage elected.
- Employee Only: is eligible for a monthly allowance of $1,100 per month
- Employee plus 1: is eligible for a monthly allowance of $1,500 per month
- Employee plus family: is eligible for a monthly allowance of $1,900 per month
- Members hired prior to January 6, 2026, who can provide proof of medical insurance coverage through an alternative source shall be eligible to receive $750 per month
- Members hired after January 6, 2026, who can provide proof of medical insurance coverage through an alternative source shall be eligible to receive $2,000 annually (approximately $76.92 per pay period)
