Gas Utility Worker

Job Title

Provides general labor support for the Gas Department.

Work includes assisting and leading a group of employees in construction and maintenance of the gas distribution system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Works construction crew for laying and maintenance of gas pipelines.
• Paint gas meters.
• Operates various types of light equipment such as shovels, picks, etc.
• May operate heavy equipment such as back-hoe, pavement breaker and trencher.
• Trains in techniques of plastic pipe welding.
• Maintains equipment in good working condition.
• Helps load and unload trucks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of materials and equipment used in gas services.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with public and other employees.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities in Gas Distribution.
• Skill operation in tools and equipment.
• Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
• Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Tools, and Equipment Used

Motorized vehicles and equipment, including utility truck, compressors, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone.

Education

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Driver License

A valid Tennessee Driver License and clear driving record. If a candidate does not have a valid Tennessee driver's license, they must acquire one within 30 days of hire.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
