Sr. System Administrator

Job Summary The IT Infrastructure Services department invites applications for a Systems Administrator Senior with strong knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The role reports to the Director of IT Systems and Cloud Operations and will install, configure, and maintain both physical and virtual servers that support Lamar University’s mission. Responsibilities include implementing system security policies, ensuring high availability, and building technological sustainability while providing system services to technical and functional teams. Essential Job Functions Install, configure, and administer physical and virtual Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers, including user accounts, file/directory permissions, storage management, patch management, security management, NTFS/Share management, and OS upgrades. Monitor all Linux enterprise servers and proactively intervene to solve problems. Create and maintain documentation of system processes and procedures. Provide OS and application troubleshooting support as needed. Coordinate with vendors and technical support as needed. Generate, develop, and distribute statistical reports for management. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a closely related field, or an associate degree with five years of verifiable experience in a related field. At least two years of verifiable experience in a related field, with increasing responsibility and scope. Desired Qualifications At least two years of experience working in a data center environment. Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification. Key Competencies Advanced knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux server administration, CLI, troubleshooting, and day‑to‑day administration. Advanced knowledge of Linux file structures, file/directory permissions, security best practices, storage configuration, and package installation and management. Advanced knowledge of virtualization administration – VMware ESX preferred. Knowledge of fiber channel SAN storage, SAN/NAS storage systems, cloud hosting services (Azure, AWS), backup technologies, and monitoring system technologies – NAGIOS preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team. Physical Requirements May be required to lift objects weighing 15 pounds or more. Job Conditions Mainly Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., with occasional after‑hours and weekend work as needed.
