Seasonal Groundskeeper

$18.75 per hour

The Laurel School District is seeking qualified applicants for full time Seasonal Groundskeeper. This is a Level VII position, with a current starting wage of $18.75 per hour. This position will be employed from April 1, 2026 to September 30, 2026.

Under general supervision of the Director of Maintenance, perform a variety of grounds maintenance and landscaping functions such as fencing, asphalt and concrete repair, grass mowing. Dumpster cleanup, tree removal, pruning, etc. It is the responsibility of the groundskeeper to maintain grounds to ensure a safe, clean and attractive environment for students, staff and the public.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Mow, edge, trim, and water lawns, fields and other turn grounds; edge walkways; hoe and pull weeds and rake leaves; sweep litter from walks, driveways and all other district areas and property.
  • Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize and irrigate flowers, trees, grass, hedges and shrubs; water various grounds areas by hand or by operating the irrigation system, as required.
  • Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up and removing paper, trash, trimmings and debris from grounds areas, parking lots, playgrounds, and athletic fields and other district areas and property; empty waste receptacles; report need for repairs and unsafe conditions. Remedy the unsafe conditions immediately, if able.
  • Remove snow and other inclement products to ensure safety of students and staff.
  • Perform a variety of grounds maintenance work in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and surrounding landscape as assigned by the position; measure and mark with appropriate marking materials and equipment to delineate the area of play and restricting lines as prescribed and established by league and sport rules; drag, repair, mow and edged all athletic fields, as needed.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of equipment such as mowers, edgers, blowers, sprayers, trucks, backhoes, excavators, skip loaders, snow plows, shovels, tractors, trimmers, chainsaws, shears, trenchers, grinders, and line marking machines; utilize standard gardening hand tools; replace blades and fluids as needed; drive a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Assist with installing, maintaining and repairing irrigation systems as assigned; adjusts sprinklers and sprinkler systems.
  • Cleans and maintains drains and flow lines free from debris.
  • Assists in laying out and marking athletic and recreation fields.
  • Prepares grounds, ball fields, courtyards, flower beds to provide adequate, attractive and safe areas for assemblies and/or recreational activity.
  • Transports a variety of equipment to provide materials and supplies at job site as required to complete tasks.
  • Mows lawn areas with power mover and edges around walks and shrub areas.
  • Weeds and cleans around shrub areas and trees.
  • Uses hand tools to work soil and to remove weeds, undergrowth, and debris from school grounds and landscaped areas.
  • Cleans out water drainage in yards and cleans gutters on buildings.
  • Operates and performs minor service and repair to a variety of related hand and power tools including mowers, sweepers, edgers, and sprayers.
  • Maintains groundskeeping equipment and supplies to ensure availability in safe operating condition.
  • Monitors and responds to district requests and communication.
  • Aides in the maintenance department, as needed and requested by the Director of Facilities.
  • Performs other duties similar to the above in scope and function, as required.
  • Cleans job site after completing projects; removes trash and debris from job site ensuring safe space for students.
  • Anticipates and replenishes routine consumable supplies to avoid work schedule interruptions.
  • Maintains clear routes for emergency egress.
  • Does emergency cleanup as a result from vandalism, breakage, spillage, or illness.
  • Reports unruly student activities, loitering, vandalism, or similar situations.
  • Perform all duties utilizing safe work practices and utilizing safety equipment, as required.
  • Able to work shifts with hours established by management.
  • Conducts himself/herself in a professional, ethical, and respectful manner at all times.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to his/her on-going professional development.
Only minimum duties are listed. Other functions may be required as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma/GED; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
  • No experience required, but some previous groundskeeping/landscaping work is desirable.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in performing general preventative, routine, and emergency grounds maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of basic safety practices related to groundskeeping/landscaping work.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Work effectively without close supervision.
  • Operate specialized landscaping/gardening tools and equipment.
  • Understand and follow a work schedule.
  • Keep basic work records and make reports, as needed.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
