CDL Driver/Highway Maintainer (Transportation Maintainer 2 (40 Hour))

Introduction Connecticut Department of Transportation is hiring Statewide CDL Drivers for Highway Maintenance. If you hold a Commercial Driver License (CDL) and want a career in transportation and highway maintenance, join our team. Positions are available statewide; you must live within 30 miles of the assigned garage (bridge radius 30 miles). Position Requirements

• Valid Commercial Driver License (Class A or B) with Tanker and Airbrakes endorsement (Tanker endorsement required at hire).
• Valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC).
• License number, class, expiration date, and issuing state must be listed in the application.
• For bridge positions: medically cleared for respirator, no facial hair, meet equipment weight, night work required.
• Military members and recently honorably discharged veterans with at least 2 years of commercial motor vehicle experience may qualify under CDL skills test exemption.

Responsibilities Perform construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadways, bridges, and other infrastructure. Maintain small and less complex mechanical equipment or assist on larger equipment. Accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal, and mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Attend to storm events that may require presence for several days, including holidays and weekends. Produce required documentation such as CDL Class A or B, MEC, CTDOT-CDL-1, and master application during interview. Qualifications One (1) year of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintaining and repairing roadsides, roadways, bridges or airports; or work involving mechanical equipment or recognized maintenance trades. Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma in one of the maintenance trades may substitute for the general experience. Completion of the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship Program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may also substitute. Preferred: experience with snow removal, landscaping, construction, or driving CDL vehicles. Special and Additional Requirements Must possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications. Willing to accept emergency duties such as snow and ice removal whenever required. Physical and Working Conditions Incumbents will be exposed to extremes of weather, frequent lifting of heavy weights, hazardous road and traffic conditions, potential exposure to heights on bridges, poison ivy, insect bites, allergy irritants, loud machinery, and may need to use protective equipment such as respirators.
