Engineering Technician II (Department of Public Works)

Overview The Department of PublicWorks is recruiting for Engineering Technicians II who perform routine technical engineering duties. Duties include assisting in title and property ownership research; preparing legal descriptions and documents; performing material sampling and tests in the field or laboratory; measuring distances and bearings; inspecting traffic control devices and collecting traffic volume in the field; and conducting simple single area drainage studies. Drafts plans, profiles, and cross sections of transportation and flood‑control facilities; prepares preliminary construction cost estimates; assists in field investigations; prepares exhibits, As‑Builts, and final plans; calculates earthwork quantities and performs elementary engineering calculations; assembles special provisions for contract specifications; performs research for customer service requests. Conditions of Employment Background: Successful completion of a background check is required prior to appointment. Travel: Travel throughout the County is required. A County vehicle may be provided. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the duration of employment. Sponsorship: San Bernardino County does not consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Education & Experience Education : Successfully completed high school level (or higher) coursework in algebra, geometry, or trigonometry. Experience : Option1 : One (1) year of full‑time equivalent technical civil engineering work experience, including the application of civil engineering formulas, theories, and practices to construction, alteration, demolition, installation, or repair work. Option2 : One (1) year of full‑time equivalent experience performing road construction work, making road signs and minor street calculations for a County public works or related agency. Substitutions : Fifteen (15) semester (23 quarter) units of completed college coursework in civil engineering, engineering construction technology, or a closely related field may substitute for six (6) months of the required experience. An additional 15 semester (23 quarter) units of completed college coursework as described above or successful completion of the Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) examination may substitute for the required experience. Note: Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by a recognized accrediting association of the United States Department of Education. Candidates with degrees completed outside the U.S. may be required to submit an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service to demonstrate equivalency. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will have experience in road construction work, making calculations, measuring, and/or drawing plans for cross sections and streets.
