Custodian/Bus Driver-10 Months at SSHS (26-27 SY)

Custodian

Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and other school system facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping, and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork, and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash and pick up debris, etc. Reports to the school principal or assigned supervisor.

Essential job functions include performing minor or routine maintenance on appliances and equipment, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, shampooing, stripping, waxing, and buffing floor surfaces; cleaning restroom areas and replenishing paper supplies, hand soap, and hand sanitizer as necessary; cleaning windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures; dusting and cleaning desks and other furniture; emptying trash receptacles; depositing recyclable material in proper containers; inspecting heating systems and patrolling buildings to inspect for safety or maintenance problems; sweeping sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; policing grounds, picking up debris; shoveling snow and/or applying de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways; and disinfecting high-touch and widespread areas.

Additional job functions include opening and/or securing buildings at start and end of work day, turning on and off lights at start and end of day, adjusting heating or air conditioning as appropriate; arranging furniture for meetings or other events; lifting and/or moving furniture, equipment, and supplies; working at special school events as required; and performing other related functions as directed by the supervisor.

Minimum training and experience includes graduation from high school and two years of experience in custodial work, or a combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job functions.

Minimum qualifications or standards required to perform essential job functions include physical requirements, interpersonal communication, language ability, intelligence, verbal aptitude, form/spatial aptitude, motor coordination, manual dexterity, interpersonal temperament, and other requirements such as a valid NC driver's license and a school bus driver's license.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include general knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in custodial work; general knowledge of safety precautions and warning signals regarding school building equipment; general understanding of the proper procedures for handling hazardous wastes and hazardous substances; some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials; ability to follow a written schedule; ability to follow instructions; ability to perform medium to heavy physical work; ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing assignments; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Bus Driver

Under general supervision, work performed includes driving the bus safely to the destination and return; following school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes; and monitoring students' behavior while they are riding on the bus.

Essential job functions include driving the bus safely to the destination and returns, conforming to traffic rules and regulations; making vehicle pre-checks and recording and reporting malfunctions; following school district regulations for handling vehicle breakdowns and accident incidents; keeping the bus clean; picking up and dropping off students at designated times and bus stops; ensuring students depart the bus at their usual stops; determining that all students leave the bus at both ends of the route; taking suitable action to resolve incidents between/among students should such incidents occur; and reporting inappropriate student behavior to school authorities as soon as possible.

Safety of others includes considerable responsibility for the safe transportation of students.

Minimum training and experience includes graduation from high school, five years of responsible driving experience, completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course, ability to pass the required DOT Physical examination and have a DOT Drug Screen with negative results, and eligibility to hold a Commercial Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of driving laws and regulations; knowledge of safe bus operations; knowledge of vehicle pre-run checks and their performance; maintaining records of names and addresses of students, locations and times of stops, route information, and time sheets; administrative skills to implement established policies and procedures regarding student transportation, enforcing rules of student conduct and discipline; communication skills in dealing with students daily, communicating with parents regarding bus routes and discipline problems, and advising the transportation department of bus malfunctions; leadership skills to maintain discipline on the bus; manual skills to maintain bus cleanliness; mechanical skills to detect a bus malfunction; planning skills to develop student seating arrangements; and a common arithmetical function to count the number of students on the bus and to calculate the time.
