Recreation Supervisor

Incumbents in this classification are responsible for performing supervisory and professional work in the assistance of development and operations of youth and adult recreation programs for the community, including but not limited to, after school programs, summer camps, toddler, teen, adult and senior programs, special interest programming, special event planning and programming for individuals with special needs. Under administrative direction, this responsible and specialized work may also include management and operation of several recreation facilities that may include tennis centers, community centers, and sports fields. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring compliance with all policies, procedures, and regulations, administering the programs' budgets, and sustaining a culture of professionalism and respect at all levels. Work also involves providing customer service and creative and innovative planning to maximize participation and adapt programs to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of the community. Supervision is received from the Recreation Program Assistant Manager and Program Manager and requires considerable independent judgment in selecting the proper courses of action. Assists in organizing and executing city-wide recreational activities, programs, and special events. Oversees and executes all aspects of Parks and Recreation special events. Attends and participates in various public meetings. Completes and compiles detailed reports to include but not limited to: program proposals, payroll, attendance tracking, participant logs, and financial reports (direct payments, purchasing cards, petty cash) Recommends the employment or dismissal of subordinate personnel. Assists in the planning and leading of in-service training programs. Plans, organizes, and supervises assigned phases of recreation program. Participates in the public relations program relating to recreational functions. Inspects facilities and equipment and administers repairs needed. Instructs in various recreational activities. Works with the Recreation Program Assistant Manager in developing budget recommendations and implementation of assigned activities. Recommends, schedules, and leads community recreational activities. Supervises the coordination of busses for fieldtrips and special events. Create staff schedules, organize staff meetings and trainings, etc. Overseeing all youth, teen, adult, senior, family, and special needs programming for the Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Department. Assists with coordinating activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, promoting teambuilding, ensuring staff provides excellent customer service, and directing the work of subordinate employees. Assists in preparing program proposals, recreation program budgets and managing professional services and independent contractor agreements. Assists in recruiting, training, supervising, directing, and evaluating staff to include contracted instructors and volunteers. Assists Recreation Program Assistant Manager with implementing and evaluating recreational activities, programs, and special events. Regularly handles sensitive and confidential information. Applicant must disclose whether they can swim. If the applicant cannot swim, they must always wear a life vest while on the pool deck and in the pool. Provides clerical support, program registration, answers telephones and emails and maintains correspondence with other divisions or agencies. Responds to resident or park patron complaints; prepares information and marketing bulletins, news releases, and other publicity on recreation program activities and special events. Monitors department assets, conducts facility maintenance inspections, and implements corrective courses of action regarding facility maintenance, furniture, fixtures, equipment, utilities, and regular maintenance. May perform emergency custodial maintenance work. Set up tables, sports equipment, chairs and like for classes and programs. May open and close the operations of the recreation facility. Performs other related work and special projects as required. Performs related work as required. GUIDELINES Guidelines include City and departmental mission statements and strategic plan; departmental work plan, administrative regulations; federal, state, and local laws. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. CONTACTS Contacts are typically with other City personnel, representative of external agencies, and members of the general public. Five (5) years of full-time verifiable experience in the supervision of public park and recreation services with (3) years of lead supervisory experience planning and implementing recreational programs, fitness and parks, athletics, supervision and evaluation of staff and facilities. Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. An associate degree in recreation, sports management, education, or a related field. Experience can substitute for education. Must become First Aid and CPR certified within (6) months of hire. DCF 40-hour Childcare Facility Training Requirement started within first 90 days of employment and must be completed one (1) year from the date the training began. City will pay for the DCF 40-hour childcare requirements and testing a maximum of 3 takes Applicant must be able to work at various locations and varying shifts, holidays, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, alone or in a team. Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone, computer, and personal contact. Significant, standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, and kneeling. Some crawling, reaching, balancing, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone, computer and personal contact. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment, such as, but not limited to, word processor, Microsoft office, recreation software system, credit card machine, calculator, copier, and fax machine. May require significant standing, walking, moving, pulling, pushing, sitting climbing, carrying, bending, or kneeling. The work is may be performed while sitting at a desk or table, or while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, delivers tables, chairs, stage panels, etc., and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. #J-18808-Ljbffr
