University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Department: Orthopedics Position #00828933 – Requisition #35525 Job Summary This is a unique opportunity to work in an academic and clinical adult orthopedic surgery practice. The position will be a full-time exempt (non-hourly) instructor – physician assistant / nurse practitioner position in the Department of Orthopedics providing full‑time weekend coverage for the spine, adult reconstruction, oncology and sports sections of orthopedics. The employee will work at the University of Colorado Hospital at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. The position is not eligible for tenure. Key Responsibilities Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations on assigned patients; assess and treat acute/chronic medical problems (focusing on the musculoskeletal system) and provide direct patient care to a specified patient population. Write prescriptions for medications, PT, OT, imaging studies, and DME as needed. Complete FMLA and other forms and work notes as needed. Assist in providing pre‑op and post‑op care; write appropriate orders, including those for narcotics and other scheduled drugs. Perform emergency lifesaving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar emergencies. Notify attending physician on call, house physician on call, or supervising physician regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation. Practice safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods. Coordinate the activities of patient care and support staff with various clinics. Write progress notes on patients' office and hospital charts indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed; maintain other records as required. Provide health education to patients and families; may train and supervise medical students, residents, fellows, and other advanced practice provider students or other health professional students engaged in specific clinical activities. Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in‑service meetings and workshops. Participate (attend, give talks, help organize) in educational programs including weekly academic conferences, journal clubs, etc. if interested. May assist in community outreach events including giving educational talks, organizing, planning, and attending if interested. Help develop written educational materials and treatment protocols for specific conditions and post‑operative care. Assist in preparing and giving PowerPoint and poster presentations for educational purposes at institutional, local and national meetings if interested. Become proficient in documentation and use of the current electronic medical record program and be an available resource to other health care providers. Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned. Flexibility required as the nature of the position will change over time as one gains knowledge and experience with orthopedic adult reconstruction conditions. This position works the weekend, Friday‑Monday 6/7 am‑4 pm, and will be located primarily at the University of Colorado Hospital at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications State of Colorado Certified Physician Assistant or inclusion in the State of Colorado Advanced Practice Registry as an advanced practice nurse; certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. CPR certified. Preferred Qualifications Experience preferred. May be willing to train new graduates with previous hospital/or orthopedic experience or exceptional qualities. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification; certification pending, as documented by temporary certificate. 6 months to 1 year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
