Elementary School Librarian

The Elementary School Librarian fosters a love of reading, supports student literacy, and creates an engaging library environment that inspires curiosity and lifelong learning. This position plays a vital role in promoting literature through dynamic book talks, collaborative instruction, and reader advisory services that encourage all students to discover books they enjoy.

Essential Responsibilities

• Library Program
• Manage the daily operations of the elementary library.
• Organize and maintain library resources, circulation, and inventory.
• Promote responsible use of library materials and technology.

Literacy Leadership

• Plan and deliver engaging book talks for students in grades K5 that generate excitement about reading.
• Introduce students to a wide variety of genres, authors, and reading levels.
• Match students with books that align with their interests and reading abilities.
• Create displays, reading challenges, and special events that encourage independent reading.
• Support school-wide literacy initiatives and reading programs.

Instruction & Collaboration

• Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate library resources into classroom instruction.
• Teach information literacy, digital citizenship, and research skills appropriate for elementary students.
• Assist students in locating, evaluating, and using information effectively.
• Support curriculum through literature connections and instructional resources.
• May include some typing instruction for students in upper grade levels.
• You will be hosting students in 50 minute rotations throughout the day. Each grade level will be seen during the day for a total of 6 rotations. Lunch and before/after school duties will also be included.

Student Engagement

• Build positive relationships with students and create a welcoming, inclusive library environment.
• Encourage curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation of reading.
• Facilitate library activities, author studies, and literacy celebrations.

Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate library records and reports.
• Participate in professional development and school committees as assigned.
• Communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, students, and families.

Qualifications

• Experience working with elementary-aged students preferred.
• Knowledge of children's literature and current reading trends.
• Experience presenting engaging book talks or literacy activities is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift library materials up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to move throughout the library and classroom spaces as needed.

Work Schedule

• This position follows the school district calendar and requires attendance during regular school hours, with occasional evening or special event responsibilities.
