Central Sterile Technician

Job Description

The Central Sterile Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the efficient operation of surgical instrumentation and sterilization practices in perioperative services. This position involves a variety of responsibilities to maintain high standards of safety and cleanliness in a healthcare environment.

Essential Functions

• Create assignments as needed and communicate with the surgical team about operational needs.
• Ensure smooth operation of surgical instrumentation and monitor workflow throughput.
• Maintain Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification and complete necessary continuing education.
• Assist in organizing continuing education and in-services for the central sterile department.
• Verify the proper operation of autoclave units on a daily basis.
• Manage inventory by ordering supplies and maintaining stock levels.
• Conduct biological and chemical tests at the start of each shift and document results accordingly.
• Inspect autoclaves for visible signs of malfunction and report to the Central Sterile Supervisor.
• Use sterilization principles for the proper wrapping or packaging of items.
• Process surgical items using either ethylene oxide or steam sterilization methods.
• Assist with clerical work related to supply charges and department needs as requested.
• Work closely with the Central Service Supervisor in the orientation process for new staff.
• Apply aseptic techniques in daily tasks and perform general cleaning of department surfaces and storage areas.
• Restock patient care unit supply carts and assist in charge reconciliation when necessary.
• Participate in departmental performance improvement initiatives.
• Perform cleaning procedures for various medical scopes, utilizing appropriate high-level disinfection methods.
• Assist in maintaining appropriate supply levels to facilitate patient flow and turnover.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education

High school graduate (or equivalent) required.

Minimum Work Experience

At least 6 months of experience in central sterile processing required.

Minimum Licenses and Certifications

Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification required.

Required Skills

Candidates must demonstrate a strong work ethic, knowledge of standards set by the IAHCSMM, excellent interpersonal skills, and effective communication abilities.

Shift Information

This position is for 32-hour days, with some weeknight and weekend call required.

Holiday Coverage

Not required.
