Lead Respiratory Care Practitioner (NRP required), Day shift

Houston Methodist

At Houston Methodist, the Lead Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) serves a lead role for an assigned shift and/or area, performing lead job duties that include projects or specialized responsibilities as part of the normal job. In addition, the position requires Sr RCP level duties and advanced procedures. The Lead RCP acts as the liaison between management, staff and physicians for routine matters, serving as the primary point of contact for resolving questions and issues for RCPs and support staff, thereby ensuring exceptional patient care and adherence to standards of practice for optimal patient safety, quality outcomes, and customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section. Experience Four years experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) with two years ICU, Neonatal and/or ER (preferred at HMCCH), and lead/supervisor experience. May consider HM employee with three years respiratory care experience, one year as a HM RCP and who demonstrates progressive leadership abilities. Licenses and Certifications – Required RRT – Registered Respiratory Therapist (NBRC) – National Board for Respiratory Care_PSV RCP – Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner – State Licensure – Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation_PSV by the Texas Medical Board BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation or Instructor (AHA, AAP) – American Heart Association and American Academy of Pediatrics Must have one of the following within 6 months: RRT-ACCS – Registered Respiratory Therapist Adult Critical Care Specialty (NBRC) NPS – Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (NBRC) CPFT – Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (NBRC) RPFT – Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (NBRC) RRT-SDS – Registered Respiratory Therapist Sleep Disorder Specialty (NBRC) AE-C – Certified Asthma Educator (NBRC) TTS – Tobacco Treatment Specialist (NAAP) RPSGT – Registered Polysomnographer Technologist (BRPT) Licenses and Certifications – Preferred PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – preferred, depending on area assigned.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing assessments and evaluations. Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential functions, especially those affecting patient or employee safety. Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a customer‑service focused manner. Works independently. Handles challenging diagnostic procedures and patient care situations. Demonstrates sound judgment and above‑average clinical skills. Possesses basic computer knowledge; operates multiple systems including Hospital/Respiratory Information Systems and office software to maintain patient records. Exhibits strong interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills across all levels of the healthcare team. Adapts to multiple priorities with minimal supervision, organizing workflow and participating in problem‑solving.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

People Essential Functions Role models communication skills for team members and assists in their development. Collaborates with management and the interprofessional team, actively communicating and reporting patient care information. Serves as the department’s primary resource for staff, ensuring optimal services and outcomes. Mentors RCPs, Sr RCPs, students, and support staff to build confidence and competency. Provides feedback to management on team performance, and assists in improving skills and outcomes. Initiates problem resolution within the work unit and models accountability to optimize department engagement. Service Essential Functions Executes clinical and critical thinking skills in challenging procedures and patient care situations. Acts as liaison between team members, management, and physicians to resolve routine matters. Identifies needs for adjustment or intervention to ensure optimum patient care and experience. Monitors and readjusts activities of the assigned team to maximize throughput and experience. Drives service improvements to impact department patient‑satisfaction scores. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Conducts quality audits on equipment, processes, and team performance, documenting and evaluating outcomes. Provides direct assistance to physicians in testing and assessing results, taking corrective action as needed. Assists in developing policies, procedures, and protocols, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards. Finance Essential Functions Documents patient procedures accurately and enters charges at the time of service. Uses resources efficiently and manages time effectively, reducing overtime and reviewing team members’ time cards for approval. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Initiates and leads department projects and shared governance activities. Participates in department committees or subcommittees, facilitating goal achievement. Seeks learning opportunities beyond baseline competencies to develop leadership skills. Maintains an individual development plan (IDP) on an ongoing basis. Creates a positive teaching environment and engages students and coworkers in learning opportunities aligned with business objectives.
