Sessional Lecturer: CHL5150H Data Collection Methods for Research and Evaluation Projects Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto) SESSIONAL LECTURER for Fall 2026 Term, at .5 FCE – CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Course# & Course Title: CHL: 5150H Data collection methods for research and evaluation projects Course Description This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the application of a variety of data collection and generation methods to diverse public health problems, challenges and issues. Throughout the course, students are expected to complete the readings, participate in class presentations and discussions Course Learning Objectives Select when and how to use different methods of sampling and recruitment Critically assess the relative benefits and weaknesses of each data collection and generation method Consider when and how to implement an explicit community-based and social justice approach to research Develop data collection and generation implementation processes and anticipate/solve problems Identify ethical issues related to each data method Critically assess threats to validity and credibility and anticipate how these can be addressed As part of a group, design and implement a data collection or generation method Prepare a project management plan. Minimum Qualifications PhD in relevant area of study, detailed knowledge of and field experience of implementing the following data collection/generation methods used in the social sciences: face to face/telephone/online surveys; focus group discussions; diaries; photovoice/cellphilm; observation; and concept mapping. For each of the data collection/generation methods, detailed knowledge of the participant recruitment methods; sampling principles and methods; community-based research and social justice principles; rigour/credibility; research ethics issues and challenges; data management methods; and project management principles. Description of duties As well as normal in person teaching duties, the instructor will review and revise the course syllabus, plan lectures and other learning activities; plan and evaluate student assignments; mentor students and support learning, and communicate with the MPH program director as necessary.
