This position reports to the Discipline Manager - Instrumentation and Controls.You will have the opportunity to join our Delivery Center team providing project support throughout our entire Energy and Resources operating unit. This includes exposure to industry sectors such as Mining, Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Oil & Gas production, processing and transportation, and the rapidly growing Renewable Energy sector including exciting and iconic energy transition projects across North America. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects both domestic and international. The successful candidate is expected to evaluate, select, specify, and engineer certain instrumentation and control systems or products for a project; along with various other tasks including calculations, QC and field work. This role is a full-time staff employee position.Your Key ResponsibilitiesSafety is a core value for Stantec. Your personal commitment to safety will help us achieve our goal of zero harm within our operation and for our clients.Engages in the development of design through verbal, written, and visual methods including sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and redlines.Supports or leads project coordination meetings with internal multi-discipline team members and/or external consultants, owner reps, contractors, sub-contractors, and vendors.Participates in client project requirement meetings, PHAs, value analysis sessions, and basic cost estimating.Assists other project leads with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.This position is intended to be client facing and includes attending client meetings, which may at times be remote, as well as corresponding directly with the client.Part-time office presence is a requirement.Leads and / or works on multiple projects when required.Leading or member of technical team developing instrumentation and controls deliverables including but not limited to: instrument datasheets; instrument index; instrumentation calculations; installation details.P&ID development input and support.Participates in HAZOP and various other process safety assessment, evaluation, and design sessions.Participates in 3D model and constructability reviews.Evaluates, selects, specifies, and designs all instrumentation specified systems or products for a project.Develop controls designs and deliverables including shutdown keys; control narratives; control system architecture and network details; control system integration plans; control system panel designs; I/O , wiring schematics and various other logic and safety deliverables.Designs facility / mine-wide industrial networks: fibre-optic backbones and drops; ;leaky feeder radio; hoist signaling and Wi-Fi / LTE coverage. Selecting network hardware including ruggedized equipment and appropriately rated equipment for the hazardous areaSpecifies, designs, selects control and auxilliary systems and multiple networks in a mine environment.Leads and supports the design of control / server rooms including consideration of many aspects including: console layouts, engineering–operations network segregation, server racks with mine-hardened enclosures, UPS/redundant power, patch panels/fiber terminations, dust-protected HVAC, and physical security.Design for the integration of multiple utility auxilliary systems and their communicaton networks: CCTV and security systems including explosion-proof IP camera selection and layouts; fire and gas detection and alarm systemDevelops instrument location plans and cable routing layoutsCompletes cable schedules and selects cables according to service including LSZH, chemical and fire resistance.Design within the hazardous area classification standards (NEC, IECEx, ATEX, ISA) for gases and dusts and confined space hazards.Specify and select fire, gas, smoke, heat etc… detection systems and integrate them into the facility control system.Field instrumentation specifications and material requisition development.Multidiscipline vendor equipment package reviews and vendor documentation reviews for purchased instrumentation and control equipment.You will be responsible for the review and analysis of drawings for possible safety and constructability problems prior to issuance to clients.Your Capabilities and CredentialsSelf-starter, with the ability to handle change and work with minimal supervision. You must be a contemplative person who is willing to challenge your own work as well as the work of those around you.Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, along with excellent interpersonal abilities and willingness to work in a team atmosphere.Previous experience as a Lead Engineer on detailed engineering/construction projects with a consulting firm or owners team.Experience in underground mine design will be a strong assett.Demonstrated leadership skills and project engineering experience.Ability to take the lead on a project team and mentor junior staff members.Willingness to travel to client sites or other Stantec offices (~10% travel).Education and ExperienceBachelor’s Degree or Technical Diploma in a related engineering field (Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Electronics)10 + years of experience in engineering, design, and construction in the sectors covered by “heavy industry” including Oil & Gas, Thermal and Hydro-Power Generation, Mining, etc… Particular experience in the Power sector will be beneficial,PE Licensed in the state of Texas or Arizona, or the ability/commitment to acquire one. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
